With summer in full swing, you may be getting ready to embark on a much-anticipated summer vacation. However, leaving your home unattended for an extended period can be cause for concern. When you’re traveling, your home can be left vulnerable to potential break-ins, as well as other risks.

Matt Neelan, the owner of the handyman franchise TruBlue Home Service Ally in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, shares some essential tips on summer home maintenance and security to ensure your home remains safe while you're away, including the opportunity to join TruBlue’s Home Watch Program.

Preventing Break-Ins

Neelan, who owns two homes in Florida and one in Pennsylvania, emphasizes the importance of making your home appear occupied even when you're away. "For starters, make sure to have your mail collected," he advises. "Packages left undelivered are a telltale sign that no one is home."

Updating and testing your security systems is also crucial. Neelan suggests checking the batteries in your Ring doorbell and security cameras, ensuring all your deadbolts are locked and inspecting outdoor lighting. For an added layer of security, Neelan recommends setting a light on a timer inside your home, so it goes on and off at different times of the day, giving the illusion of activity within the home.

Many TruBlue franchisees like Neelan offer a Home Watch Program where they can inspect your home before you leave, checking locks, installing deadbolts, replacing batteries and setting up security cameras. TruBlue can also continue to monitor and check on your home while you are away for another added layer of protection.

Smart Home Systems

The right smart home technology can also go a long way in keeping an unattended home safe in the summer, says Neelan.

“These systems can alert you to potential issues, such as fires, intruders, burst pipes and packages being delivered,” said Neelan. “They also allow you to control your home remotely. In our own homes, we rely on our smart home technology heavily, both when we are away and when we are home.”

As part of the Home Watch Program, TruBlue can also help you get your smart home systems set up properly.

Home Maintenance

Before leaving for vacation, Neelan advises you to take care of routine maintenance tasks. These include cutting the lawn, cleaning out your refrigerator, locking away valuables in a safe and ensuring all bedroom doors are open to maximize air flow throughout your home.

There are also several little factors that may slip your mind. “For those with a fish tank, make sure you clean it out before leaving — we had to learn about that the hard way,” he said. “Cars should be kept in the garage and locked, and garbage cans should be stored away. Make sure you take out all the old food in the refrigerator. Close the blinds so nobody can peek in. Taking the time to do these things before you leave helps to ensure you won’t come home to any unwelcome issues.”

By signing up with TruBlue’s Home Watch Program, for example, you  can hire a professional to come by periodically to check for leaking pipes, storm damage, rodents or if the furnace or AC has broken down.

“At the end of the day, if you go on a road trip, you get that car inspected — it should be the same with your home," said Neelan. “By being more prepared, you can fully enjoy your summer vacation with the peace of mind knowing that your home is secure and well-maintained.”
