Working in commercial litigation, Ben Chernow spent his days dealing with disputes between companies and other business entities. Having a front-row seat to corporate dispute after corporate dispute wore on him, and he decided he wanted something different for himself — something where he could have more independence and through which he could make a meaningful impact in his community.

“I kind of always had a desire for financial independence — self-sufficiency,” said Chernow. “So I’ve always been drawn to entrepreneurship. I didn't really have any hands-on business experience, so franchising seemed like a great compromise.”

“Through franchising,” he added, “you can kind of get your hands on a proven business model and something that you know works.”

After researching different franchise opportunities, he settled on becoming a multi-unit franchisee with Seniors Helping Seniors, opening three territories in the Maryland suburbs outside of Washington, D.C. He says the support from Seniors Helping Seniors and the regular business coaching he receives through his franchise coach has helped him build the right team of caregivers and start his business off on the right foot.

1851 Franchise caught up with Chernow to discuss his transition from commercial litigation to franchising, why he chose Seniors Helping Seniors and the lessons he’s learned in his first few months of running his business.
