Augusta Business Daily: CSRA Executive Dips His Toes in Uncharted Waters with Poolwerx

Neil Gwynne, formerly a high-ranking manager at Amazon overseeing 130 managers and 3,500 associates, including at the fulfillment center in Appling, GA, has embarked on a new entrepreneurial journey with Poolwerx, the industry-leading full-service swimming pool repair, maintenance and retail franchise.

“Eventually, I got tired of being in the corporate world, I really wanted a better work-life balance,” Gwynne said. “Amazon isn’t famous for being good at that. I wanted to be more in control, able to make my own decisions, learn from my own failures, and set my own culture.”

In May 2023, Gwynne officially launched his Poolwerx business in Augusta as a mobile service, offering a range of pool services including residential and commercial pool cleaning, retail equipment sales and repair. 

His venture took a significant step forward in late November when he signed a lease with Jordan Trotter Commercial Real Estate. This agreement was for a retail store in the former DJ’s Water Ice shop, located next to prominent eateries in a shopping center outside the Riverwood Plantation in Evans. The opening date of this brick-and-mortar store, which will complement his mobile service by selling pool and spa supplies and offering expert advice on DIY pool issues, has yet to be announced.

Gwynne spoke highly of the support system provided by Poolwerx, particularly for someone who wasn't initially a pool expert. He appreciated the comprehensive business model that Poolwerx offered, which includes support in technology, operations and marketing. This model has allowed him more time to relax poolside with his family.

“I am 100% already feeling those benefits. My wife sees a whole different me,” said Gwynne. “I’m less stressed and much more relaxed. Sure, I’m still busy, but it’s a different kind of busy. I am still working long days, but when you are working for yourself, there is a whole other level of motivation and satisfaction. That is what I love most about being a franchise owner with Poolwerx.”
