Finding the Right Fit in Caring Transitions
When Anne Kedl decided to open her own business for the first time, it was a natural next step in a career defined by helping people and creating homes. “I’ve done a ton of real estate with flips and staging,” she said. “I got into social work for many years and then decided it was really good timing for me to start my own business. My career has looked a lot like housing and helping people.”
After years of managing projects and teams for others, Kedl was ready to take control of her future. “I was tired of working for other people,” she said. “I always ended up in charge, but didn’t have all the decision-making power that I wanted even though I was in charge. I knew I would be good at it and I knew it was the right move for me at the time. If I don’t do it now, I’m never going to do it.”
Kedl began exploring business ownership in 2024, researching different franchise opportunities and speaking directly with owners to understand what it takes to succeed. “I started reading up on franchises, and it seemed like a personal blend of the things I’ve done in my career,” she said. “I looked at several concepts and I talked to a lot of franchise owners. As a result of doing those validation calls, I decided to bring on a business partner.”
That partner, Jennifer Freeman, shared her passion for service. “When I started telling her about Caring Transitions, she got really excited and it was a no-brainer for us to jump in together,” Kedl said.
What stood out most about Caring Transitions for Kedl was the combination of structure, leadership and mission. “It seemed like the brand really had their act together,” she said. “There was going to be the support that I needed. I did fix-and-flips all on my own, and I knew if I was going to start my own business, I would really want the structure of a franchise underneath me. Caring Transitions really felt like a great fit. It felt like the leadership was top notch. It felt like it was a very needed service that people were willing to pay money for.”
A Strong Start — and Rapid Growth
Caring Transitions of Denver Southeast officially opened in October 2024, and business quickly exceeded expectations.
“The year has been great,” Kedl said. “We ended up buying a second territory in May. We have done twice the business we had originally set out to do. We’ve been super busy. We’ve gotten a lot of good systems in place. We’ve been really fortunate to hire a great team. We’ve really enjoyed the work and felt extremely productive. We’ve been very lucky.”
The franchise’s built-in support system made all the difference. “There are a lot of things I didn’t even know I needed to do, which was great to have the structures to succeed,” Kedl said. “From the very beginning, we could talk through and problem-solve. We felt like when we had a question, there was always someone we could talk to get an answer.”
The Reward of Meaningful Work
For Kedl, one of the most unexpected joys of owning a Caring Transitions franchise has been the deeply personal connection with clients.
“The one thing that has been so fascinating about this job is all the different stories we get to be a part of,” she said. “Being part of people’s lives as they make these transitions feels like a privilege. We really fall in love with all of our clients and enjoy that process of getting to know each family and alleviating their stress. I kind of knew that would happen, but it has been really rewarding. Each story has been so interesting and rewarding to be a part of.”
