The Madison store has always been popular with the college crowd, but things took an even more favorable turn for the brand in 2018 when decreased market saturation opened the doors for college-age customers who had previously dined elsewhere.

&ldquo;We saw some competitors in the market fall off and so those customers started to try us out,&rdquo; <a href="https://1851franchise.com/chebahut/info/index.html" target="_blank">Cheba Hut</a> Chief Operating Officer Marc Torres said. &ldquo;Since we have a really amazing product that&rsquo;s a lot better than much of what&rsquo;s out there, our Madison restaurant was able to gain quite a bit of traction. It&rsquo;s just been heating up out there in Madison.&rdquo;

In 2018, sales at the Madison Cheba Hut store grew by 13 percent in the first quarter, 17 percent in the second quarter, 22 percent in the third quarter and 33 percent in the fourth quarter, Torres said. Sales reached just under $1 million at the end of 2018, which marked a 22 percent increase from 2017, Torres said.

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s just getting busier and busier as competitors have dropped off and as we&rsquo;ve really dialed in some of the locals,&rdquo; Torres said.

The <a href="https://1851franchise.com/chebahut/cheba-hut-year-end-wrap-up-growth-and-momentum-2708498" target="_blank">momentum continues</a>. The brand is already seeing more than a 30 percent first-quarter increase. To celebrate this uptick in traffic propelled by strong customer support, the Madison Cheba Hut is giving out free &lsquo;Nug&rsquo; sandwiches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

&ldquo;There has just been really good traction out there,&rdquo; Torres said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been able to convert those new, local customers and it&rsquo;s really helped fill out sales.&rdquo;

The brand has seen this kind of surge in demand before, as its Eugene, Oregon restaurant had a similar experience.

&ldquo;It was similar in that there was only one store in the state,&rdquo; Torres said. &ldquo;It takes a little longer for traction to gain locally, but once it catches and the word starts spreading, it really starts to take off. We&rsquo;re seeing the same kind of 20 to 25 percent increases as we have in Madison. The Eugene location hit $1 million in 2018.&rdquo;

Torres attributes that growth to a combination of Cheba Hut&rsquo;s <a href="https://1851franchise.com/chebahut/cheba-hut-adds-to-its-leadership-team-with-new-vp-of-marketing--2709181" target="_blank">digital marketing efforts</a> and brand awareness.

&ldquo;Some of the digital and social media things we&rsquo;ve done over the past couple of years have really helped,&rdquo; Torres said. &ldquo;We re-did our website and made it more SEO-friendly and local-search friendly, so now, when you search for sandwiches in Madison or in Eugene, Cheba Hut shows up better on those searches.&rdquo;

Once a customer has had a taste of Cheba Hut, it&rsquo;s hard to curb the craving. Torres noted the brand&rsquo;s <a href="https://1851franchise.com/chebahut/how-product-quality-and-revenue-stay-high-at-cheba-hut-2708818" target="_blank">commitment to quality</a>.

&ldquo;I think our customers are more aware of what they&rsquo;re eating these days,&rdquo; Torres said. &ldquo;They&rsquo;re more conscious of the value they&rsquo;re getting for their dollar. We supply a really good product at a really good value. Our sandwich bread is baked by actual bakers, not someone making $12 behind the line. We&rsquo;re not using frozen dough balls. When you look behind our service line we have measuring spoons. We have measuring bowls. We&rsquo;re making our food, not taking it from a bag and making your sandwich.&rdquo;

The brand&rsquo;s success in Madison bodes well for its Midwestern expansion plans. Cities in the Midwest where the brand would like to establish a presence include Ann Arbor, Michigan and Columbus, Ohio, particularly around Big Ten Conference universities.

&ldquo;The Midwest is one of our biggest target markets,&rdquo; Cheba Hut Chief Relationship Officer Seth Larsen said. &ldquo;The success of our Madison location proves that consumers are willing to try new things and are seeking higher-quality eating options. We&rsquo;re confident that an expanded brand presence in the region will be very well-received.&rdquo; &nbsp;

Torres noted that brand enthusiasts drive to the Madison restaurant just for Cheba Hut.

&ldquo;The success of the Madison store is leading the way for future success in the Midwest, where we&rsquo;re kind of breaking down some barriers with conversions,&rdquo; Torres said. &ldquo;People tend to have misconceptions of what we are and what we do, but as soon as they come in and see our product and try our product and see that people are happy to be here and want to be here, then their perceptions change. We&rsquo;re turning guests into die-hard fans and that&rsquo;s going to pave the way for a lot of success in the region. We&rsquo;re very excited to bring out some partners to help develop the area.&rdquo;

Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs.
