TechCrunch: Facebook Relaunches Event App as Facebook Local

Facebook Local combines events, reviews, photos and checkins from Facebook's data to help users discover more than events.

Facebook’s latest move doesn’t look good for services like Yelp. According to a recent TechCrunch article, Facebook has rebranded its standalone Events app as “Facebook Local” to help users discover more than events—bars, restaurants and nearby attractions too. The launch will be available today on iOS and Android in the U.S.

Using Facebook’s local business data, photos and review from users, the Facebook Local app could compete with Yelp and Foursquare, giving users an even easier way to make plans with friends. Seeing nearby restaurants, attractions, drinks and where your friends go can help you pick the next bar to go to and find one with a band or new menu item you want to try.

For now, the app won’t be open for advertisements from businesses but the company has said they will consider it down the line.
