What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Chang:&nbsp;My parents came to the U.S. when I was 19, and I went back to high school to learn more English before going to college. I graduated from Seattle University and became an electrical engineer. We know that they are a very successful global brand, and we feel they have a strong chance in the U.S. and in Washington, specifically. I will be staying at my full-time engineering job, so I won’t be on the frontline of Paris Baguette with my sons — at least until I retire. But by helping them with this foundation, they’ll be able to run the business as a family business and grow from there.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Chang:&nbsp;I knew that buying a franchise meant I would have to pay royalties and follow the guidelines.&nbsp;As someone looking to start a small business, you might think that you should avoid franchising because of those costs. But another thing to consider is that the brand name is already established, and the products are well-developed. You don’t have to spend as much time trying and failing and trying and failing. What excites you most about this company?Chang:&nbsp;When I look at my local markets, I don’t see anything like Paris Baguette. If they had to create their own plan and develop a business, they would have to go through a lot of failures along the way, and that might discourage them from pursuing their dreams. Once they’re successful with Paris Baguette and learn more about business, then they will be better equipped to expand into a new business of their own if they’d like.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Chang:&nbsp;I want my sons to have a good life — one that is not limited because of finances. Once you’re financially stable, you can see more things and live your life for more reasons than just making money. You can look for things that bring meaning to your life. I want my sons to get to that level.I also want them to be able to look out for other people. We’re Christian, so that value is very important to us. But in order to do that, you have to have some sort of financial freedom. You have to get to a certain point before you can look around and see if anyone around you needs help. Hopefully, the business will help them get to that point.1851:&nbsp;What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Chang:&nbsp;I know that the business will be demanding, and my kids will have to work overtime as they get it started, but eventually, we’ll try to get them to a point where we can hire and train more people. We can grow with our employees and have them step into management roles to share some of that responsibility with us.That will allow my sons to have more time freedom to do other things including going to church and keeping their faith. That will also create opportunities for them to participate more in the church and community. As we become successful, we can start looking out for places where we can help. We can start through activities through the church and expand from there. That is our ideal scenario.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Chang:&nbsp;The first thing is to look at the financial aspect. Do you have the financial power to become a franchisee? Look into how much it will cost to set up a business, and be sure to ask the franchisor specific questions about cost. If you are a first-time franchisee, you might not know which questions to ask, so be curious and understand that there may be some things you might miss.Another thing to consider is what will be required of you to run the business. How many people will you need to hire? What are the business hours? What is the cost of goods? You’re running a business to make money, so figure those things out and try to come up with your profit potential to help make the decision.Remember that what the franchisor tells you might not be completely true for you. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs.
