Shifting away from life as a professional athlete can be a refreshing, but an overwhelming journey for players who’ve focused on perfecting one craft for much of their life. For Famous Toastery franchisee Justin Griffith, he saw entrepreneurship as an outlet where he could apply the skills he developed from the game and coaching.
Griffith gained recognition playing college football at Mississippi State University and soon after joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2003. He played in the NFL as a fullback for almost a decade before transitioning to coaching for four years, using his expertise and experience to prime players for success. After several years in spent on the field or sidelines, Griffith turned his eye to entrepreneurship, looking for a lifestyle that required less traveling, greater independence and set hours so he could spend more time with his wife and newborn baby.
“I was in the NFL for 12 years and knew I wanted to open my own business, but starting a business from scratch seemed incredibly daunting. The framework within franchising and the support from the Famous Toastery team broke down every component of running a successful business into a step-by-step process that I could follow. Corporate has been extremely helpful on the operations side as well as developing and marketing my brand across Uptown,” Griffith said.
Griffith and his wife, Kim, opened their Uptown Famous Toastery location in late March 2018, marking 30 locations for the better breakfast brand as it capitalizes on its prominent presence in Charlotte. The two-story, 5000 sq. ft. location features a grab-and-go section offering guests hot and cold options, in addition to a private room for business meetings and large groups. Each day, Justin and Kim are on the floor, greeting customers, refilling coffee and supporting their team from the ground level up.
“I joined Famous Toastery because it focuses on quality ingredients and always puts the customer first. It’s so rewarding to see people in my community really enjoying the food, the service and coming back time after time, even as we’re still so new in Uptown,” said Griffith. “Every day, I go in with a smile on my face. Right now, I’m really focusing on continuing to build our name in the community and focus on operations.”
Looking ahead, Famous Toastery is focused on building out its national scope as it enters new markets. The brand is looking for dedicated multi-unit restaurant operators to fill in states as far west as its location in Colorado and most northern location in Pennsylvania.
