With more than 4,300 locations across North America, Great Clips is an undisputed leader in the salon segment of the franchising industry. From its simple business model to its commitment to innovation, the brand is consistently ranked as a top franchise opportunity—including its recent 7th place ranking on Entrepreneur’s annual Franchise 500 list. In an effort to build on that strong momentum, Great Clips is now breaking into a new market for the first time in the brand’s 35-plus year history: Ottawa.

“At Great Clips, we’ve always been focused on making sure that we have a full support network in place before we start recruiting franchisees in new areas. To ensure that our franchisees have the tools and resources that they need, we’ve been very strategic when it comes to our Canadian expansion. Now that we’re experiencing growth in the greater Toronto area, we can move farther North and East, with Ottawa being the next natural step for our brand,” said Beth Caron, Great Clips director of franchise development. “There’s no doubt that Ottawa is a great city. It’s not just because it’s the capital city of Canada—the market is filled with our core customer base, and we’re excited to enter this market and see significant growth.”

Now that the market is open for development, Great Clips is looking to open a total of 30 to 35 salons in the greater Ottawa area. And according to the brand’s director of business services, Craig Touchie, that won’t be a challenge. The Ottawa market offers a lot of competitive advantages for qualified and motivated prospective owners, and the Great Clips team is eager to help franchisees capitalize on them.

“I think that when you look at Ottawa as a development market, there’s a lot to be excited about. There’s diversity in population, from students and professional workers to families. There also seems to be a lot of retail development in the pipeline across the board, which indicates that we’re breaking into Ottawa at the perfect time. The city is also full of potential customers—when you look at the population, you’ll see higher than average income, relatively low unemployment and a stable economy that’s primed for competition,” Touchie said.

Great Clips has been experiencing consistent growth across Canada for years, allowing franchisees who enter the system in Ottawa to leverage rising brand recognition and climbing demand for its services. The Canadian market is perfectly primed for growth—John Kellett, a franchisee who’s been with the brand for a decade, says that the opportunity for aspiring Great Clips franchisees has never been better. As the owner of three locations in Aurora, Stouffville and Vaughan, he’s seen interest in the brand start to spike, paving the way for success in Ottawa.

“What Great Clips brings to the table is quality and customer service at an affordable price. We also have a strong technology advantage—we might be competing in a low-tech segment of the franchising industry, but Great Clips is a high-tech salon brand. We have Online Check-In and Clip Notes, which our customers love,” said Kellett. “But what ultimately makes Great Clips stand out is its simple business model. Whether you’re opening up a salon in a small town or a big city, the formula is the same. Wherever we open our doors, we’re providing an unbeatable service at a reasonable price. When you combine that with the proven Great Clips franchise system, customers will line up at your door.”

Kellett adds that it’s that ability to bring in customers that makes this the perfect time for Great Clips to grow in Canada, saying that while major salon chains have saturated some markets in the U.S., Canada is still untapped.

Touchie said, “There’s never been a better time to be a part of the Great Clips brand, especially in Canada. We just opened our 150th salon in the country, and we’re in growth mode. In the last two years, we also opened up a Canadian office that currently has nine corporate employees. That means franchisees who sign on to open up their own salon in Ottawa will have access to a strong support team both in the U.S. and North of the border. If you’re willing to follow the system, motivated to work and are looking to create a profitable organization that can be passed down, this is a great time to get in the door.”
