Griswold, the fast-growing non-medical home care franchise with over 170 locations, believes in supporting its caregivers not just in their professional journeys but in their personal lives as well. Hannah Kamara’s story, for example, is a powerful testament to that.

Kamara began her caregiving journey after immigrating from Sierra Leone to the U.S. in 2006. “I’ve always loved taking care of people, especially seniors,” she said.

Joining Griswold as a caregiver in 2020, Kamara immediately made a significant impact on her colleagues and clients with her compassion and dedication. However, her life took a challenging turn when she was diagnosed with breast and bone cancer on April 6, 2022.

“I called Griswold, and they were crying on the phone with me,” said Kamara. “From day one, they were always there for me, offering help in any way they could. I will forever be grateful for them.”

Despite the immense difficulty of battling cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kamara’s resolve remained unshaken. As she focused on her treatment, which began in 2022, she was forced to take a two-year leave of absence. Unfortunately, during this time, she also lost her apartment and had to navigate temporary housing with her teenage daughters. They moved multiple times, and her children had to adjust to different schools, adding further strain to an already challenging situation. Yet, through it all, Griswold never left her side.

“The support Griswold provided was incredible,” Kamara said. “They helped us with winter clothes for the girls, school supplies and even full meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They were with me through every step of the way.”

In the face of such adversity, Kamara’s spirit remained strong, and her return to Griswold in 2023 was nothing short of triumphant. Now back at work, she continues to receive medical care but thrives every day. Her presence at Griswold is a source of joy and inspiration to everyone around her.

“Griswold is like a family to me, and I love working with them,” said Kamara. ”I wouldn’t change that for anything.”

When Jean Griswold started the company in 1982, her goal was to give back. She deeply cared for the clients she served and was equally committed to supporting the caregivers, who are indispensable to the brand’s mission. Caregiver-focused initiatives such as The Jean Griswold Foundation, which supports caregivers through scholarships, help further position Griswold franchisees as employers-of-choice in the senior care industry. The brand was endorsed as one of only eight National Providers in Best of Home Care® in 2023 and 2024.

“At Griswold, we strive to provide the best possible support for our caregivers, just as they provide the best care for their clients,” said CEO Michael Slupecki. “Hannah’s story is a reminder of why we do what we do. Through the ups and downs, Griswold stands with caregivers like Hannah, ensuring that they have the resources, emotional support and community they need to thrive. We are honored to have Hannah back on our team and look forward to witnessing her continued strength and success.”

The challenges Kamara faced didn’t just strengthen her resolve — they also brought an unexpected reward. On top of her return to caregiving, Kamara recently achieved a major milestone: she became a U.S. citizen.

“It was very exciting becoming a U.S. citizen,” Kamara said. “I was very nervous and couldn’t believe it, but it’s such a blessing. I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received along the way.”
