WHY I BOUGHT
With initial investments starting at just over $100,000, Honest Lash, the emerging Texas-based lash franchise, provides an affordable business model that positions its franchisees to break into the booming beauty franchise industry. Jonathan Ambriz and Holly Johnson, a brother-sister duo who come from cybersecurity and higher education, saw just this in the model and decided to make the switch.
“I was looking at any and everything I could because I was just so eager to get involved in business,” said Ambriz. “I researched probably 20 franchises before I decided on Honest Lash. I really wanted to have a structure in place that would help me be successful, and I also wanted to be able to have a family member go in on the deal with me. I was talking to my sister, Holly, one day, and she mentioned that she had seen an advertisement about Honest Lash and that she thought there was a lot of money to be had in the health and beauty industries. It seemed like something we could both agree on and be passionate about, and we went from there.”
Ambriz brings over a decade of experience in cybersecurity consulting and leadership, and Johnson was a professor of biology. As the pair breaks into the over $90 billion and growing beauty industry, Honest Lash provides both the proven business model and team leadership they will need to successfully make the leap and keep growing.
“What’s remarkable about this opportunity is that you need to invest less than you would need to for some of its other competitors,” added Ambriz. “Honest Lash is more accessible in terms of net worth and initial investment requirements, and you’re providing a better offer to your customers at a lower price point than other similar businesses. It’s a more efficient business decision for your money, in my opinion, and it’s really easy to scale.”
The team is already planning to reinvest in their business, expanding to a second and third location in the area once the first studio is up and running. As they grow in their own business, Ambriz said they are also looking forward to growing with and contributing to the franchise system in its early stages.
“Holly is really creative, and she takes a lot of ownership of what she does,” he explained. “In a newer franchise, she will have a little bit more leeway in that regard. Honest Lash has a good balance of freedom and structure. As a newer organization, they’re still developing and testing a lot of things out, but at the same time, they have a lot of experience in business. Jonathan Ellis comes from the McDonald’s world, so he understands where processes need to be implemented and how to standardize them.”
Ellis has also played a crucial role in the development of the franchise system by making himself and his expertise available to franchisees. He has been so involved, in fact, that Ambriz said he was pleasantly surprised by how invested Ellis has been in their success. Rather than meeting the founders once and only speaking with support and administrative staff for each following interaction, Ambriz said that Ellis has been directly involved in the development of the new El Paso location.
“Obviously, there are certain restrictions to what Jonathan can and can’t do because he’s the franchisor; he can’t make certain decisions for us. But there are a lot of things he’s helping us with that we wouldn’t have even thought of, and that has been great,” said Ambriz. “It’s really nice to have that stability and structure that I was looking for but still have the flexibility that Holly wanted.”
