Whether you call it the “Big Quit,” the “Turnover Tsunami” or, more commonly, the “Great Resignation,” a historic number of American workers are leaving their jobs in the wake of the pandemic. A Microsoft-sponsored survey from January 2021 showed that more than 40% of employees were thinking about leaving their jobs at the beginning of that year. Many took action as the year went on, with more than 24 million American employees leaving their jobs between April and September 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A recent MIT study suggests that toxic culture is “by far the strongest predictor of industry-adjusted attrition,” weighing it as 10 times more important than compensation when predicting turnover.

“Company culture can make or break an organization,” said John Mattone, award-winning executive coaching authority and co-founder of Intelligent Leadership Executive Coaching (ILEC). “Culture offers a glimpse into a business's values, mission and vision, and toxic cultures create a stressful environment for employees, which hinders performance and, as we’ve seen, strongly influences their decisions to eventually leave a company.”

Mattone is the creator of the proprietary Intelligent Leadership® philosophy, which he teaches to his ILEC coaches.

“We've got the tools and processes to help organizations get a handle on what's working in their culture, and what's not working,” he said. “That's our differentiator — we're going to partner with you because if your operating imperative is to be more innovative, you’d better have a culture that supports that imperative. Learning about each client and each business is crucial so we can build an individualized approach.”

ILEC does this by focusing on what Mattone has dubbed “The 5 Cultures of Culture”:

What this assessment tool does is help clients measure their culture, determine their readiness to transform their culture and then, finally, help them implement the necessary changes to facilitate the culture that best serves their unique goals.

It’s this individualized approach based on proven concepts that makes ILEC a global leader in transforming company cultures.

“You've got to build something that people want to be a part of, and culture really defines what that is,” said ILEC Executive Coach Dennis Pierce. “The world is a better place when we're able to have a dynamic team of individuals that all bring separate skill sets and different perspectives to the team. A leadership coach helps wake the culture that you're operating within and helps to transform it, retaining valuable team members.”

Since developing the Intelligent Leadership® philosophy in 2010, Mattone has helped thousands of executives and businesses worldwide transform their leaders and cultures. Now, he’s empowering his ILEC franchisees to do the same as independent executive leadership coaches, one business and one leader at a time.
