Q&A With K-9 Resorts Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO Steven Parker
What about K-9 Resorts makes it unique within its industry?
In 2005 when my brother Jason and I founded K-9 Resorts, we saw an opportunity in the industry to make boarding facilities cleaner, nicer and more fun. We capitalized on that opportunity at the right time—when we launched, kennels and dog boarding facilities were surrounded by negative feelings. We set out on a mission to change that by studying why people felt that way. Every K-9 Resorts facility provides a comfortable, clean and healthy environment. Dogs that stay with us are happy, which then makes their owners—and our customers—happy.
What have been some of the brands most important milestones over the past five years?
Becoming one of the top three rated pet care facilities in the U.S. is a tremendous honor for us. Our multi-million dollar investment with the private equity firm Navigator Partners was also a major milestone in addition to the sale of our 10th franchise.
What plans does the brand have in the coming years?
K-9 Resorts is going to continue improving its service and maintaining its award-winning status in the growing pet care industry. We’re going to grow nationwide and expand to new communities including the West Coast. We have every reason to believe that we’ll have 100 franchise locations within the next six or seven years.
What does an ideal franchisee look like?
First and foremost, our ideal franchisee is someone who loves dogs. They’re also a passionate entrepreneur who wants to go into business for themselves but not by themselves, and is looking to follow a proven system. Ultimately, they need to be an ambassador for the K-9 Resorts brand.
Why is K-9 Resorts a good investment?
We have a phenomenal business opportunity. Everything is working in our favor—the pet care industry has 25 years of consecutive growth, and the fastest growing segment is high end dog hotels. It doesn’t get more high end than K-9 Resorts. We’re one of the top three pet care facilities in the country, we have a proven track record and our Item 19 is one of the strongest in the industry.
