The Melting Pot, the 94-unit fondue franchise that has built a name in the experiential dining space, is targeting its newest expansion market in a string of expansion efforts. After an incredibly successful 2022 with 78% of restaurants achieving record sales and an uptick in activity in the franchise development pipeline, the development team has set its sights on Alabama.

“We had great success in Alabama before with locations in Huntsville, Mobile and Birmingham,” explained Collin Benyo, franchise growth strategist for the brand. “Due to challenges outside of our control and other unforeseeable circumstances, we are no longer in the state. This is a true untapped market with remarkable interest as proven by the number of leads that we see in franchise development inquiries.”

With capacity for four restaurants across the state, Benyo says the Melting Pot team is focused specifically on the Birmingham area, as data has shown great potential in Mountain Brook and Cahaba Heights.

As it grows, The Melting Pot is looking to partner with passionate franchise owners. Because of the business model, which leans so heavily on human connection, celebration and unification, Melting Pot owners are most successful when they fully commit to the opportunity and are genuinely interested in providing something special to their community.

With this mentality, owners quickly connect with Melting Pot enthusiasts and new guests alike, only building their representation as a go-to restaurant for celebrations and gatherings more quickly.

In this vein, Benyo says he “would like to find a true Southern restaurant enthusiast who is looking to take over this state by opening four locations within the next five years.”

Benyo also added that he aims to visit Alabama later this year to meet with prospective franchisees as they continue to drive the process forward.

The Strengths of the Melting Pot

Last year, The Melting Pot took on an effort the team lovingly referred to as Melting Pot Evolution. The primary focus of this initiative was the modernization and unification of restaurant design, bringing interior layouts and themes up to date while incorporating other playful elements that nodded to the warmth of The Melting Pot like candles and fireplaces.

Multiple restaurants were remodeled in 2022, and the remainder are scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. In addition to increasing interest among prospective franchisees, it also drove traffic, and in turn, revenue, at the store level.

“2021 and 2022 were both tremendous years for the brand in terms of increasing traffic — real growth,” explained Bob Johnston, CEO. “In other words, we had growth that came not just through price increases, but actual traffic increases. Seventy-four restaurants in the network achieved all-time sales records in 2022.”

In addition to its design innovation, The Melting Pot is able to embrace increased flexibility and innovation in the real estate sphere, relieving a bit of pressure from franchisees in challenging real estate markets.

“Like most Melting Pot cities of interest, we have flexibility in how we look for real estate in our Alabama markets,” Benyo added. “The Melting Pot is not a traditional culinary franchise, so we don’t find ourselves limited to traditional real estate.”

As it continues to grow, The Melting Pot is targeting a range of cities across the south including Memphis, Houton, Fort Worth and Chattanooga.
