Shattering the Glass Ceiling: Women in Franchising

Statistics show that the franchise industry is becoming more diverse than ever before. During the past few decades, that is largely thanks to the hard work of women leaders who have carved a path for fellow women entrepreneurs to follow.

The franchise industry has long been seen as a male-dominated field, but in recent years, women have been breaking through the glass ceiling and achieving success as franchisees and corporate leaders.

“In 1980, when I started my first management position in franchising, there were some times where male franchisees didn’t have confidence in me because I was a woman,” said Catherine Monson, CEO at Propelled Brands and IFA Immediate Past Chair. “So, I worked harder and built more value. I could wine about it, but I wanted to prove them wrong and blow them away with my competency. There were times where I was the only female executive in the room, or at the table hearing uncomfortable stories from men. But I didn’t want to be a victim; I wanted to be a victor. If you can provide more value than your competitor, you are always going to win.”

And the franchising industry offers a great opportunity for women to put in the work and provide that value. Franchise businesses have a proven business model, ongoing support and training from the franchisor, and a strong brand, which makes it a relatively low-risk option for entrepreneurs of any gender.

Another factor contributing to the trend of more women entering the space is the fact that franchisors have become more intentional in their efforts to recruit and support female franchisees. Many franchisors have implemented initiatives and programs to support the advancement of women in franchise ownership. This includes things like targeted recruitment efforts, mentoring programs and networking events for women franchisees.

Additionally, many franchise brands have also been working to adapt their offerings to better appeal to women entrepreneurs. For example, they’re developing franchise models with lower investment requirements, flexible hours or home-based options.

These advancements are all thanks to the countless women corporate leaders who have come into the franchising space over the past few decades and worked diligently to make it a more inclusive and equitable place.

These women have all achieved great success as leaders in franchising, breaking through the glass ceiling and proving that women can be just as successful as men in the industry. They serve as role models and inspiration for other women looking to start their own business or climb the corporate ladder in the franchising industry.
