Chris Cornwell spent the first 27 years of his life in Sacramento, California. It wasn&#39;t until he was offered a job at Apple Inc. in Austin, Texas that Chris, a married man by then, decided to move away from the city he&rsquo;d long called home. It was less than a decade later, when Chris and his wife had a child, that the couple decided to move back to Sacramento to be near their family. Before arriving back in California, Chris already had a new career plan in place, one that would take full advantage of his return home. Cornwell, along with his brother, John, and father, Terry, would open the family&rsquo;s first restaurant franchise, a <a href="http://www.togosfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=for-norcal-native-chris-cornwell-togos-is-home-2705633" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Togo&rsquo;s</a>, the sandwich brand that the Cornwell family had grown up with.

Once the family decided to break into franchising, Chris says landing on <a href="https://togos.1851franchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=for-norcal-native-chris-cornwell-togos-is-home-2705633" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Togo&rsquo;s</a> was a no-brainer.

&ldquo;We didn&#39;t really look at any other brands,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;We knew we wanted a Togo&rsquo;s. We&rsquo;d always been fans of Togo&rsquo;s growing up, and we wanted to get into something that felt familiar and that we knew we could stand behind.&rdquo;

Chris worked as a project manager at Apple, and he had some experience in the food-service industry. Between those experiences and the support of Togo&rsquo;s corporate team, Chris felt he was well equipped to run the day-to-day operations of a Togo&rsquo;s restaurant.

&ldquo;I&rsquo;d done some research on what it looks like to run a franchise business, and we got in touch with Togo&rsquo;s development team to learn more about their operations specifically,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;It all seemed like something we could be successful with.&rdquo;

After interviewing with the Togo&rsquo;s corporate team and completing the discovery and training processes, the Cornwells took over their first Togo&rsquo;s store, which they purchased from a previous owner who was retiring from the business. Chris says having a staff in place from the store&rsquo;s previous ownership helped them to get up and running quickly and efficiently.

&ldquo;We were on our feet almost immediately,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;The employees and manager there already knew what they were doing, so we didn&#39;t waste any time.&rdquo;

With an experienced staff handling the customer-facing operations, Chris says he, John, and Terry were able to focus on finding which of the high-level operations best suited each of their skillsets.

&ldquo;My father does all of the back-office administrative stuff,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;He deals with vendors, keeps track of our P&amp;L sheet, talks to corporate, things like that. I&rsquo;m more operations focused, and John works with the manager on day-to-day stuff.&rdquo;

The Cornwells were soon able to open their second Togo&rsquo;s store, and now, less than three years after they first reached out to Togo&rsquo;s development team, the Cornwells are preparing to open their third. Chris says that some of that growth can be attributed to the new speed line operational model that Togo&rsquo;s has been rolling out to stores this year.

Until recently, Togo&rsquo;s restaurants used a pay-last model, where customers would place an order at one station, watch as their meal is prepared at the next station, and finally pay at the third station&mdash;the cashier&mdash;when their food is ready. The new speed line model combines the first and third stations, allowing customers to pay as they order at a single station, saving time and reducing communication errors. Chris says the speed line model, which was introduced to one of the Cornwells&rsquo; two stores, has made a marked improvement in the store&rsquo;s operational efficiency.

&ldquo;We knew the speed line model was being introduced to a few select stores at the end of last year, so we got in touch with corporate and asked them to consider our store,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;The store is very busy, so the idea of getting customers in and out faster was very appealing, and it worked.&rdquo;

As the Cornwells prepare to open their third Togo&rsquo;s, Chris says there is no doubt that they will open the store with the speed line model right off the bat, and he&rsquo;s eager to implement any other upgrades that the corporate team has on the docket.

&ldquo;The leadership we have right now and the direction the company is moving in is really exciting,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m so happy we came on board when we did because you can see Togo&rsquo;s is preparing to do really great things in the next couple of years.&rdquo;

Operational innovations aside, Chris says the biggest Togo&rsquo;s selling point is the same one that drew his family to the brand when he was a kid, the sandwiches.

&ldquo;The difference between Togo&rsquo;s and every other sandwich shop comes down to both quality and quantity,&rdquo; Chris said. &ldquo;The sandwiches are so fresh and so delicious, and they never skimp. That&rsquo;s why we always loved to go to Togo&rsquo;s growing up, and that&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;ve found so much success as owners. When we were looking to open a business, we wanted something that we could run as a family, and we wanted something that meant something to us as a family, and that&rsquo;s what we got with Togo&rsquo;s.&rdquo;

Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs. I wanted to make this my future as well, so I decided to go into the franchise business with Fresh Coat Painters.Grigsby:&nbsp;We looked at several franchises before selecting Fresh Coat.
