For Sean Fitzgerald, President of TruBlue Home Service Ally, leadership has never been theoretical. It has been shaped by lived experience that revealed not only the gaps in how families prepare for aging, but also the opportunity to build something better through TruBlue Home Service Ally. He recently shared his perspective as a contributing author to “Aging in Place Conversations - The Caregiver's Edition: Stories, Strategies, and Support for Aging in Your Community”, a series created by members of the National Aging in Place Council.
At the center of his mission is a philosophy Fitzgerald returns to often. “Here’s what I know for sure: aging in place is a process,” he wrote. “When done right, it’s safer, more affordable, and what seniors deserve, but it requires commitment, clear steps, and the willingness to think ahead.”
That belief is a leadership framework rooted in foresight, discipline and a commitment to solving problems before they happen.
A Leadership Philosophy Built on Experience
Over more than two decades, Fitzgerald has worked across senior care, rehabilitation and home services, gaining a 360-degree view of what it truly takes to support aging populations.
From his time at BrightStar Senior Care to his leadership role at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers, Fitzgerald saw firsthand how care extends beyond clinical settings. It is influenced by mobility, environment and, most critically, the home itself.
Today, as President of TruBlue, that insight shapes his leadership approach. “Our business model is great because the demand to age in place is only going to increase,” Fitzgerald said. “I don’t see that going away anytime soon.”
Rather than building a business that reacts to needs, Fitzgerald has focused on one that anticipates them. That is a theme that runs through both his leadership style and TruBlue’s operational model.
The Personal “Why” Behind the Mission
Behind Fitzgerald’s leadership is a deeply personal story that transformed his professional focus into a lifelong mission.
After navigating the realities of caring for his mother during her battle with cancer, Fitzgerald saw firsthand how difficult it is for families to adapt homes in real time. But it was another moment that ultimately defined his purpose.
A fall suffered by his father-in-law changed everything. “In that single moment, everything changed,” Fitzgerald wrote, recalling how quickly a normal home became inadequate for care.
Despite the family’s efforts, they were forced into a reactive position as they tried to modify a home that had never been designed for safety. That experience shaped one of Fitzgerald’s core leadership beliefs.
“Most falls can be prevented,” he wrote. “Most homes can be adapted. Most crises can be avoided, if families have the information and support to plan ahead.”
It’s a mindset that now drives both his leadership and TruBlue’s mission.
From Insight to Framework: The Three Pillars of Aging in Place
Fitzgerald’s ability to simplify complexity is one of his defining leadership traits. In his writing, he outlines three pillars that guide successful aging in place, a framework that also mirrors how he builds teams, systems and businesses.
1. Start With the Home
“The number one challenge to aging in place is the home environment,” Fitzgerald has said. “We fill that unique niche.”
His book reinforces that idea, emphasizing that many risks are hidden in plain sight:
“Most falls don’t happen because a senior is clumsy, they happen because the home is working against them.”
2. Make Meaningful, Practical Changes
Rather than large, disruptive renovations, Fitzgerald advocates for simple, high-impact solutions.
“You don’t need a total remodel. You need the right plan, the right priorities, and a partner you trust to make it happen,” he wrote.
3. Commit to Ongoing Maintenance
If there’s one area where Fitzgerald sees families fall short, it’s consistency. “Even the safest house becomes dangerous if routine upkeep is ignored,” he wrote.
That insight has shaped TruBlue’s recurring service model, which emphasizes ongoing maintenance over one-time fixes. “We can help you treat your home like you would your car,” Fitzgerald said. “Everybody gets their car in for maintenance routinely, and your home should be the same.”
Leadership That Extends Beyond the Business
Fitzgerald’s leadership philosophy is deeply tied to impact. At TruBlue, that means building a model that serves both customers and franchisees meaningfully.
“Our higher standards are already built in because of the senior market,” Fitzgerald said. “But that level of professionalism and peace of mind is something all homeowners appreciate, regardless of age.”
That commitment to trust and consistency is not accidental. It is a direct reflection of Fitzgerald’s belief that businesses should be built around real problems and real people.
A Growing Industry, Guided by Purpose
The aging-in-place movement is no longer a future trend. It is a present-day reality driving demand across the home services sector.
“It’s no longer theoretical. The wave is here,” Fitzgerald said. “We’re seeing it in real time, and it’s what’s driving our growth.”
As assisted living costs continue to rise and more families seek alternatives, TruBlue’s role becomes increasingly critical. “There aren’t going to be enough assisted living facilities,” Fitzgerald said. “That will only drive the cost up more. Everyone is looking to support aging at home.”
The Core Lesson: Leadership Is About Anticipation
At its core, Fitzgerald’s leadership philosophy comes down to one idea: anticipation. It’s a lesson reinforced both personally and professionally. “Safe aging in place does not happen by accident,” he wrote. “It happens because people who care take action before a crisis.”
Whether guiding families, supporting franchisees or scaling a national brand, Fitzgerald’s approach is rooted in thinking ahead. And it is what continues to define both his leadership and the future of TruBlue.
