1851: What was it that drew you into franchising?&nbsp;

Natasha Case, CEO and Co-Founder of <a href="https://cool.haus/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=young-ones-to-watch-natasha-case-of-coolhaus-2704936" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Coolhaus</a>: We actually only have one franchise, our Dallas operation. This was a very case specific decision to franchise there, as we had particularly strong partners approach us. The Dallas franchisees already had a food truck that roamed the city, so they knew the lay of the land very well. Also, operating an ice cream truck where you are not cooking hot food seemed manageable considering their other truck operation (Nammi) has to keep a lot more raw ingredients in inventory and operate more complex kitchen equipment. Lastly, our Dallas partners are both former architects, so they are an undeniable good fit with our brand!

1851: &nbsp;What do you see as the biggest change that is going to impact the franchise industry going forward?&nbsp;

Case: E-commerce and on-demand delivery. This is a very centralizing process, so it creates less needs for duplicated boutique retail outlets, in theory.

1851: &nbsp;What advice would you give to other young up-and-comers?&nbsp;

Case: Concentrate on your brand and bringing a unique vision/story-telling method through your product to a growing audience that wants to be part of your culture... and think BIG!

1851: &nbsp;What advice would you give to your younger self?&nbsp;

Case: You can walk through a wall when you don&#39;t know it&#39;s there. That&#39;s to say, inexperience or non-business-based training (in my case, architecture) can actually be an advantage, not an obstacle. It helps you think differently and approach risk in a more pure, visionary way.

Case: Test the model before selling many. Minimum viable product is always ideal.

1851: &nbsp;What&rsquo;s an innovative company (that&rsquo;s not in franchise space) that you like and you think franchising can learn from?&nbsp;

Case: Glossier is very cool. And I love the less is more approach... &#39;make-up&#39; being more about doing small things, so you can wear less overall. The products have an iconic, non-super-brandy look. They found an all-natural, somewhat feminist angle... it&#39;s cool how they have a point of view.

It’s really fun.1851:&nbsp;What do you think about Mainland’s “Brands don’t sell brands, people do” method?Wood:&nbsp;When I'm browsing, I'm going to click on stuff that I feel like I relate to or something that is a human interest story.In franchising, people often think, “I'd love to do that, but I don't know if I can,” or “Somebody else can do it, but I just can't.”&nbsp;Being able to see the kind of person that's doing it, and, no matter who you are, there's someone who has a similar background or that you can relate to in some way, that has done it. I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through. When someone at the franchisor gets home from work, their family will ask, “How was work?” When a franchisee gets home, their family is asking, “How were sales today?” or “How was traffic?” These are franchise units, but they often represent the investment of someone’s life savings and a manifestation of so many hopes and dreams for the future. They went to franchise portals. They attended franchise expos. They read industry media. That exposure introduced brands — and then candidates were largely on their own.My gut says candidates actually moved faster back then. When the unit struggles, no amount of franchise sales can fix it.<h2>Step 2: Identify the Few Metrics That Actually Drive Performance</h2>Unit economics don’t need to be complex to be effective. In most service-based businesses, profitability comes down to a handful of operational realities that can be measured, improved and scaled.For&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/preservan/info">Preservan</a>, the model was built around production capacity rather than abstract growth targets. The focus wasn’t on how many franchisees the brand could sell, but how many productive vehicles could realistically operate within a territory and what those vehicles needed to generate in order for the business to work.“We didn’t think about the number of franchisees,” McBride said. “We thought about the number of vehicles.”<h2>Step 3: Stop Treating Franchise Sales as the Business Model</h2>Many emerging franchisors are drawn to the upfront appeal of initial franchise fees. Early on, those fees can feel like validation and momentum. Over time, they become a distraction.Initial fees are not the value of a franchisee. That reality raises the stakes on franchisee selection.Successful systems look beyond personality fit and enthusiasm. Many founders enter franchising without ever modeling what the business needs to look like at scale in order to be viable.That includes understanding how many units must perform at what level in order to support staffing, systems, innovation and ongoing franchisee support.“How do you know if that franchise fee’s enough?” McBride said. “How do you know if the royalties are the right number?”<h2>Step 7: Invest in Franchisee Success Before Accelerating Development</h2>Development dollars are finite. Every dollar spent chasing growth is a dollar not spent strengthening the system.Preservan intentionally pulled back on development activity to focus on helping new franchisees succeed through their first full operating cycles. That decision delayed short-term sales but strengthened long-term positioning.“We can go get more franchises, or we can focus on making sure franchisees have kick-ass years,” McBride said.Strong performance eventually becomes the most effective sales tool a franchise system can have.<h2>Step 8: Think in Multi-Year Horizons</h2>Franchising forces founders to shift from short-term operating cycles to long-term system building.
