When Dan DiZio was a teenager, he already had his eye on the prize. In fact, he already worked in the pretzel business, selling pretzels on the corner for a local entrepreneur. In college, the pretzel bug continued, and he, along with his college roommate and now business partner Len Lehman, founded Philly Pretzel Factory. DiZio is now something of a Philly celebrity, having been featured on Undercover Boss. His 100-plus-unit brand has poised itself for strong, non-traditional growth with the launch of its new kiosk, a fully operational Philly Pretzel Factory in a smaller footprint. Innovation is not DiZio’s middle name, but it sure could be. I GOT INTO FRANCHISING BY: Actually by accident. A couple that visited the original store several times really pushed and insisted with Len (Lehman) and I that they wanted to pursue the pretzel business as well.  We were hesitant at first but they won us over. We ended up allowing them to open the first franchise location. I LOVE FRANCHISING: because I can grow and build the brand and provide a business opportunity. IN THE FUTURE: It is hard to predict where we will be in the future. We obviously want to continue to grow and become a stronger brand throughout the entire United States not just the northeast part of the country. DO YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE OPPORTUNITY: Yes, I feel that all demographics are well represented within our franchise. FUTURE FRANCHISORS SHOULD: The main point I would suggest is to surround yourself with a strong support staff that understands franchising. Focus on a quality job, stay connected with the business on a daily basis. FUTURE FRANCHISEES SHOULD: Make sure that you understand the business model that you are getting involved with.  Have a strong work ethic, think in a positive way to grow your business /location.   --NICK POWILLS
