CNBC: Snapchat vs. Instagram—Users Shed Light on Why Each Platform Matters

Snapchat and Instagram are a lot more different than you might think. CNBC surveyed the apps' most avid users to find out why.

Snapchat and Instagram might be competing for ad dollars, but more and more teenagers, young adults and business owners are finding that they have room for both on their phones. And that’s because when compared side by side, they each serve very different functions.

CNBC recently interviewed 24 young adults about their social media and app habits, and how they utilize both Snapchat and Instagram.

The survey revealed that Snapchat is used for communication with peers, like sharing something funny or sending a quick update note. Snapchat can also beget more honesty.

“With Snapchat, I like how instant it is,” said 15-year-old Caelin. “I really like instant gratification so the fact that you can have such a quick conversation with someone is great.”

On the other hand, Instagram is more for sharing details about your personal life with friends and family, and is useful because just about everybody is on it—not just teenagers. This makes this service especially valuable for brands.
