1851: How did I fall into franchising?
Mullin: When I graduated from high school, I had no car, no driver’s license, and no college plans. I worked full time at the local 7-Eleven – a corporate store run by my future husband – which was within walking distance of my house. It was there that I learned about franchising as a business model, and learned about merchandising and cash reports. Fast forward a couple of years, I managed to work my way through college and law school, and was referred to franchise attorney, Art Pressman, who at the time was representing 7-Eleven in a legal matter. My business experience and ability to read cash register Z reports helped me to secure a law clerk position with Art’s firm.
1851: What I love most about franchising?
Mullin: I think that business ownership, like home ownership, gives people a sense of self-worth. I also think that for many people the idea of being in control of your own income is more gratifying than a fixed paycheck, regardless of the amount.
1851: What makes a great client?
Mullin: A great client has a strong business model focused on unit profitability.
1851: What makes a great franchise lawyer?
Mullin: Putting yourself in your client’s shoes and taking care of the client as you would yourself.
