Everyone at some point has thought about being “that guy” – you know, the one that everyone really likes, wants to be around and even help out just because? In a world where people work with other people to solve “problems” all day, it helps when people like you. They’ll want to help you, maybe even bend over backward, go out of their way or burn the midnight oil, just because. So if you’re not one of those gifted people that everyone adores right off the bat, I’ve compiled a few tips to help you become “that guy.” Say Hello Rid yourself of the awkward hallway passes with semi-smiles and an occasional head nod. By simply walking by and saying “hello,” you let the world know you’re polite and respectful. Being kind is the most important step of all and saying “hello,” maybe even “how are you,” can go a long way with others. Get Up Nothing beats face-to-face communication. Get up and visit your team members at least once a day. If you have something to ask someone, especially a favor, take a moment to ask about their dog, their weekend or their swim team meet to build the relationship. Nothing can substitute for this time well spent, and the likely answer you’ll get to any question after that is “how can I help?” Show Up Some people live by the rule that if you’re five minutes early to a meeting, you’re on time. While that may be difficult to do in all instances, the most important thing is to be on time. If you’re late, you’re telling those around you that their time is not as valuable as your own. It’s an unintended consequence, but one that doesn’t sit well and more often, is not forgotten. It’s also helpful for others to know what your day looks like so they know when to “get up” and see you that day. Think about posting your “day-at-a-glance” calendar on your desk somewhere others can reference it if they need to find you. And most of all, show up mentally every day. When your smart phone distracts you, your head is in the clouds or you choose not to give 110 percent, your team can tell. Give A Heads Up When you need to send items for review or approval, allow enough wiggle room in your timeline to give the other person a chance to sit on it, think about it and respond without feeling rushed. If for any reason you need an immediate response, be sure to send an email, call or connect with them face-to-face, to let them know you need their help. (And then beg for forgiveness.) Find The Perfect Time Find the time your colleagues are always at their desk (first thing in the morning, or the last few moments before their drive home, etc.). You have their attention, so use it to your advantage. This is a great time to ask how you can be of any help to them. Find out what they are doing and what’s hogging their attention – maybe you can jump in to lend a hand. And if nothing else, it’s a great opportunity to get to know them better.   Being likeable can really help you get ahead around the office. So go for it, be “that guy” – I won’t tell.
