Mosquito and outdoor pest prevention company Mosquito Joe has been ramping up its recruitment efforts in the first quarter of 2018 to train franchisees and make sure they’re fully staffed prior to the peak of mosquito season. While states with milder winter weather, like Florida and Texas for example, rarely get a break from these insects – the rest of the country is gearing up for what’s to come.

Mosquito eggs begin to hatch as soon as temperatures consistently stay above 50 degrees and thrive in moisture, which means for those states still facing harsh weather conditions or coping with a rainy spring, this year is expected to be brutal.

“The cause of mosquitoes in your yard is mainly due to the build-up of water sources, which is why it’s important for homeowners to eliminate the sites where mosquitoes breed,” according to Mosquito Joe President Lou Schager. “Certain mosquito species' eggs are very resilient and can endure harsh winter conditions and hatch once the weather warms up. As a result, we recommend that our customers walk their property to remove water sources and eliminate the mosquito breeding locations, like standing water found in buckets, toys, tires, and gutters.”

Mosquito Joe provides mosquito control treatment to residential and commercial customers nationwide so that people can enjoy being outside again. As the U.S. continues to experience a rise in the presence of mosquito and mosquito-borne illnesses, the services provided by Mosquito Joe become more of a necessity.

For example, Wisconsin was hit with Zika carrying mosquitoes in 2017, and in a state full of large bodies of water, the threat of infection became dangerous. To help eliminate the number of these mosquitos and control the Zika outbreak, Mosquito Joe signed its first two franchisees in the state in 2018.

But while Wisconsin experiences seasonal weather, regions of the country that experience a longer mosquito season need to be adamant about their yard care year-round in order to keep it a mosquito-free zone.

Houston Mosquito Joe franchisee Kate Gould advises her clients to continuously maintain their yards to avoid the threat of mosquitoes or mosquito-borne illness.

“With the aftermath of Harvey still affecting many of us here in Houston, a lot of residents had an excess amount of water in their yards,” said Gould, reiterating Schager’s point that it’s a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Kate also warns her clients about laying down mulch in their yards. Houston provides a climate where mulch can be used year-round to add a decorative touch to a backyard landscape, but mulch can also be an ideal place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

“Consult your Mosquito Joe technician before you put down mulch in your yard,” said Gould. “Millions of mosquito eggs can be laid in mulch, which can be hard to spot if you’re unfamiliar with what they look like. Your trained technician can help, so make sure to notify them before you begin your landscaping process.”

Mosquito Joe technicians take a series of intensive courses in order to get the job done professionally and thoroughly, leaving a noticeable absence of biting insects in their wake. The brand implements training and facilitative courses throughout the year to ensure franchisees and their staff are prepared for the busy season.

“Our annual convention is held in the off-season and provides an invaluable opportunity for franchisees to share best practices,” said Schager. “We also hold training for new franchisees regularly during the off-season, and all of our unit owners go through a systematic pre-season checklist that covers all aspects of the business to ensure their teams are ready to go.”
