Before opening, Playful Pack provides site selection guidelines and assistance, reviews proposed locations and supplies standards for the design, layout, build-out and equipment of each facility. Franchisees also receive access to the brand’s operations manual, approved supplier information and other resources to help them prepare for opening.
Playful Pack’s initial training includes an owner/operator program of up to 10 days at an affiliate-owned location in Virginia or Maryland, followed by up to five days of on-site training for the franchisee’s initial staff around the soft opening. Training covers dog care and business management through classroom and hands-on instruction, with some portions available remotely.
After opening, franchisees have access to continuing consultation and guidance on managing and operating their businesses, with additional training and refresher courses available as needed. Playful Pack may also provide on-site assistance and updates to its operating manuals as the system evolves.
Playful Pack franchisees use a technology system that supports scheduling, appointment management, customer records, point-of-sale functions, bookkeeping and other day-to-day business needs. The system also includes security and video surveillance technology, cloud-based management tools and access to an online portal for reporting, training, approved marketing materials and communication with the franchise system.
Playful Pack does not specify any franchisee requirements with regard to liquid assets or net worth. The brand is looking for growth-oriented entrepreneurs, but doesn’t require any specific professional, management or pet care experience.
Playful Pack requires each franchise to have an operating principal who is actively involved in the operation and management of the business. Franchisees may appoint a designated manager to oversee day-to-day operations, but that manager must complete the brand’s required owner/operator training and receive Playful Pack’s approval. If no designated manager is appointed, the franchisee or operating principal fills that role.
Playful Pack does not offer direct or indirect financing to franchisees.
The U.S. pet industry continues to provide a large and growing market for dog day care and boarding businesses. Americans spent $158 billion on pets in 2025, including $14.3 billion on services such as boarding, grooming, training, pet sitting and dog walking, and total pet industry sales are projected to reach $165 billion in 2026. The labor market also points to continued demand for pet care: Employment of animal care and service workers is projected to grow 11% from 2024 to 2034, compared with 3% for all occupations, while employment of animal caretakers is expected to grow 12%. About 81,700 openings for animal care and service workers are projected each year over that period as pet ownership and consumer spending on animal care continue to support the sector.
Playful Pack’s competitors include Dogtopia, Camp Bow Wow, Hounds Town USA, Central Bark, K9 Resorts Luxury Pet Hotel and The Dog Stop.
The brand competes by combining several recurring pet care services within facilities built around dogs’ health, safety and engagement. Its day care program includes cage-free play, daily enrichment, constant staff monitoring, play groups organized by size, temperament and energy level, and webcam access for owners, while boarding, dog washing and grooming at select locations broaden the services available to customers. The brand also emphasizes tailored care, dog-safe sanitation and facilities designed specifically for canine exercise, socialization and mental stimulation, creating an experience centered on more than simply providing supervision while owners are away.
