Who knew politicians could be so entertaining and informing in only 140 characters?

Although their publicists might not agree, Twitter has become an extremely popular place for politicians to express their views and gain support for their campaigns. Twitter even has its own handbook for politicians.

Today you can follow, engage and tweet donations to politicians—if your candidate of choice has signed up for an account. Even the Republican and Democratic Presidential Debates are now live-tweeted by journalists, voters and candidates from opposing parties. Political beliefs aside—you will want to follow these accounts on Twitter to keep you informed and entertained during the long election year ahead.

We start off the list with those who are currently in office.

1. Barack Obama: @BarackObama The current President of the United States is—not surprisingly—the most followed politician and world leader on Twitter. His second term victory tweet is the third most popular post of all time.
2. President of the United States: @POTUS is an interesting account to follow because it does not belong to Barack Obama, but rather the Executive Office. A White House Official told CNN, the account would transfer to the newly elected president when Obama leaves office. The first tweet in May sparked a humorous exchange with former President, Bill Clinton.
3. The First Lady: @FLOTUS Michelle Obama is an advocate of nutrition, physical activity, poverty awareness, and equal pay for men and woman. These issues are dominant in her Twitter feed along with her foreign and domestic travels. One of her most popular tweets brought awareness to the kidnapping of 200 Nigerian schoolgirls in 2014.
4. John Kerry: @JohnKerry Get your daily dose of foreign policy and affairs in 140 characters from the current Secretary of State.

9. Cory Booker: @CoryBooker This New Jersey Senator is a Twitter celebrity and man of good deeds. When he was Mayor of Newark, a woman tweeted at him that her father was snowed in. Donald Trump: @realDonaldTrump Last, but certainly not least, is the Donald. Let’s just say, the real estate magnate and 2016 hopeful is not against running negative attacks in 140 characters.Trump was already known for his bold tweets, and with his #MakeAmericaGreatAgain campaign it has only continued. While he has had to delete and apologize for numerous offensive retweets, there appears to be no end in sight for his attacks on the other presidential nominees. Somewhere in between the attacks we managed to find a positive tweet.
