One definition of art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
Living in the daily hustle and bustle of the business world got me thinking: Where do art and business intersect? What about art outside the typical forms of painting and sculpture? What effect has the Internet had on art production?
With these questions in mind, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that a couple of my hometown friends, Rob Demaree and Jack Anderson, had started a business that combined technology and art. The
Three Day Gallery is a "Daily Deal" website and gallery for fine art prints with the mission of creating a community filled with potential art buyers and sellers. I caught up with Demaree to ask him about the Three Day Gallery, as well as meeting place of art, technology and business.
When did you first decide that there was a need for this type of business?
There are many other great online art galleries where you can buy prints. But from an artist's perspective there’s nothing to guarantee that every online visitor will click on or get to your profile.
Fine Art America the number one online gallery has over 200,000 artist profiles all selling their prints. So there is a lot of competition for the consumer’s eyes.
How does technology allow for a change in the art world? Likewise, in the business world?
Technology and the internet have already changed a lot for the art world. The Internet has allowed for the creation of new art communities that would not be able to exist if it weren’t for the digital connection. New printing and scanning technology is also pushing the cost of production down. More people are able to consume artwork in mass quantities than ever before. And, the same goes for artists; almost all artists now have the ability to produce and distribute prints of their work, which makes for an interesting dynamic in the industry.
Our goal is create a platform and community where an artist can instantly get their artwork in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers without needing to fight for space like on other large gallery sites. It’s an experience that benefits both the artist and the buyer.
Do you see Three Day Gallery being the direction the art business is going?
I see Three Day Gallery as a platform and tool for artists to gain exposure, and I predict the digital world will continue to evolve as art has continued to evolve over the years. Every artist has a different business model, but the more notoriety and publicity an artist or art piece gets, the more valuable the original becomes.
Do you have any advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs in terms of technology?
Great success rarely happens overnight. Three Day Gallery is still in its infancy and we have a lot of updates coming. When you are leveraging a new technology that you have not mastered, you are going to pay some "stupid tax" trying this and that, while getting some things right and wrong. My high school wrestling coach, Mike Powell, always said, "you have to stay relentless in you pursuit." So don't let one setback deter your efforts and vision.
