What do you do when you don’t have any resources? I’m here to tell you there are a lot of things you can do, especially if you’re entrepreneurial-minded,” said Culotti.&nbsp;Going by an alias and made-up backstory, Culotti had $1 million on the line and no chance at landing a good-paying job with her non-existent resume. The only option for Culotti was entrepreneurship, so she got to work.&nbsp;The road to business success, for Culotti, was a dirt road, as she found her first work helping a local farmer after talking a local inn into giving her lodging while she formulated her plan.&nbsp;But for Culotti, the pandemic proved to be a time of opportunity as much as a time of reflection.&nbsp;“One of the most important things to recognize in this environment right now is that no one is doing anything,” Culotti said of the early pandemic, when she launched her business venture. “In COVID, we were closed. The world was closed down. A lot of people were sitting at home, including the mayor, including all the big rock stars. Everybody was sitting at home and everybody was wondering what to do. That was a big opportunity for us to really reach out to the top and blend the top with the bottom.”With one foot in a farm and one foot in an underutilized inn, Culotti plotted to open a year-round farmers market to help local farmers sell honest food to the surrounding community. With a community-focused mission in mind, Culotti took her pitch straight to the top.&nbsp;“We were at the mayor’s office day one,” she said. “At the Fire department day one. City council, day one. Who is gonna help us dig out of this right now? And believe it or not, they all said yes. Nobody said no.”<h4>Culotti on Franchising</h4>Perhaps without even realizing it, Culotti had built into her business some of the key pillars of franchising. First, she found her concept.&nbsp;“I want every single person on the planet to eat fresh food. If we just did that one thing, we would all be healthier,” she said. Within that concept, Culotti identified her values and the culture she sought to create.&nbsp;Next, Culotti had to consider her market. Fresno, like much of California, is big on wellness and strong in agriculture. During the pandemic, Americans had a big opportunity to reconsider their lives and their opportunities. With a major, global health scare underway and the process of food scarcity rearing its ugly head, Culotti’s concept addressed the issues her community cared about.&nbsp;“I think we had a really wonderful opportunity to bond with our family, to look outside ourselves, to look outside of our material world that we live in and start thinking about some of our more esoteric values, the really important values that we have,” she said. “It’s not always about how much money you have in your bank account, it’s about how resourceful you are.”Finally, Culotti leveraged her concept and the way she was able to address her community’s needs. From there, she could seek out other people with shared values to propagate her message and work with her business.&nbsp;Culotti sees the connection between building up her concept and building up a franchise system.“I’m a big believer that you are going to go a lot further and be a lot bigger and a lot stronger if you are supported by a larger group,” said Culotti. “Franchising is, by definition, exactly that.”&nbsp; “You’ve got a professional outfit that’s allowing you all of your independence by supporting you,” Culotti said of franchising. “It’s not always easy. It’s not always inexpensive either, but each franchise that’s out there has built the concept of selling something, and you guys have a common interest. Common goals are the key to success. If you’re successful, they’re successful. Add the fact that you have a large support team and a common goal, and that’s why franchising works.”As for Culotti’s experience building a business in Fresno, there again she sounds a bit like a franchisor thanking her team for enabling her to manifest her vision.“I had the greatest group of people that I put together that have such heart and are so hardworking,” she said. “Talk about American pride. It’s really fun.1851:&nbsp;What do you think about Mainland’s “Brands don’t sell brands, people do” method?Wood:&nbsp;When I'm browsing, I'm going to click on stuff that I feel like I relate to or something that is a human interest story.In franchising, people often think, “I'd love to do that, but I don't know if I can,” or “Somebody else can do it, but I just can't.”&nbsp;Being able to see the kind of person that's doing it, and, no matter who you are, there's someone who has a similar background or that you can relate to in some way, that has done it. I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through. When someone at the franchisor gets home from work, their family will ask, “How was work?” When a franchisee gets home, their family is asking, “How were sales today?” or “How was traffic?” These are franchise units, but they often represent the investment of someone’s life savings and a manifestation of so many hopes and dreams for the future. <a href="https://hardeesfranchising.com/">Hardee’s</a>, a 65-year-old burger chain best known for its Thickburgers and breakfast biscuits, is facing a fast-moving round of closures driven by a franchise dispute rather than a bankruptcy filing.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.inc.com/ava-levinson/hardees-shutting-dozens-restaurants/91282586">Inc. recently reported that</a> 77&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/franchise-deep-dive-hardees-franchise-costs-fees-profit-and-data-2721286">Hardee’s</a> restaurants are expected to close within two weeks as one of the brand’s largest franchisees exits the system.&nbsp;According to the report, Hardee’s is suing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.arcburger.com/">ARC Burger</a> — a franchise operator owned by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.highbluffcap.com/">High Bluff Capital Partners</a> — alleging the company fell behind on required payments and other contract obligations. Twenty-eight locations had already gone dark as of late December, with remaining sites scheduled to shutter across eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, South Carolina and Wyoming.&nbsp;At the center of the complaint is the franchising “stack” of ongoing fees and pass-through costs that keep a system running. ARC Burger allegedly owes more than $6.5 million, including royalties, advertising fund contributions, technology and training fees, rent and taxes, and that payments stopped in December 2024. Hardee’s also argued in the lawsuit that the franchisee’s cash flow was not being used to bring accounts current.&nbsp;Hardee’s, for its part, is framing the shutdowns as a contractual enforcement issue, not a brand-wide retrenchment. “These closures are a result of ARC Burger’s failure to cure its defaults under its franchise agreements, despite solid sales,” a Hardee’s spokesperson said.&nbsp;The situation highlights a familiar franchising pressure point: unit economics.
