After serving as a C-17 pilot in the U.S. Air Force for over a decade, Jeremy Brown is taking off on a new venture: owning his own business.

Brown enlisted in the Air Force in 2003. He was first stationed at Malmstorm Air Force Base in Montanta, where he also he earned his bachelor’s of science degree in professional aeronautics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He then transitioned into an officer role, before eventually serving as a Wing Executive Officer C-17 Instructor Pilot at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

After 11 years, Brown entered the Air Force Reserves in a traditional reservist capacity. It was then that he decided to explore entrepreneurial business opportunities and discovered TWO MEN AND A TRUCK*®.

1851 Franchise recently spoke with Brown to learn more about how his military experience prepared him to successfully break into the franchising industry.

How did your military service prepare you for franchising?
I think serving in the military, especially as an officer, is an excellent precursor to joining a great franchise system like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. There are plenty of things that you experience in the military that don’t necessarily translate into the civilian world. However, there are few places that better teach the follower-ship mentality and leadership skills that are necessary to be a successful business owner.

The military also cultivates a true mission first culture. That mindset can really help veterans work through the growing pains that come along with small business ownership.

What is it about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® that attracted you to the brand?
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® was a great fit for me for a bunch of reasons. The business model made sense to me because most of my time in the Air Force was spent flying something from point A to point B. Although the vehicle is different now that I’m involved with a moving company, the logistical principles are still the same. More importantly, I really believe in the core values of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, and I got a really good feeling from everyone I met at the corporate office. It was very easy to get on board with this brand.

What advice would you give to veterans who are looking to get into franchising?
Like anything in life, owning a franchise is as much a challenge as it is a genuinely rewarding experience. But if you’re looking for a challenge and want to take on a tangible opportunity, then it’s an adventure I would recommend to anyone—especially vets. Owning your own franchise allows you to make decisions and changes every day that impact your business, life, and ultimately your success.

What does franchising mean to you?
For me, franchising—and business ownership in general—represents my version of the American Dream. I appreciate that I live and die by my own sword, and that I have the ability to get better and create positive changes every day. Those changes are something I can see, feel and measure. Being a part of a great franchise system creates the perfect balance. It gives me the opportunity to have my own business to manage and grow while having a great team and support structure in place to increase the probability of success.

What would you like to achieve in the next five years?
My vision for the next five years is to greatly increase my footprint within the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand. I hope to capitalize on the market share that still exists within the territory I’m currently operating in while expanding into several bordering territories. I have a team made up of talented and motivated individuals, and my objective is to build a company that can foster their growth and enable their development.
