Bailey McGuire and his brother-in-law Frank Sciuto will be opening their second family-owned and family-run <a href="http://www.mooyahfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=better-burgers-arrive-in-alliance-texas-774" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MOOYAH</a> restaurant on September 1 in Alliance, Texas three years after the opening of their first business venture.

McGuire runs the day-to-day operations of the restaurant, and is looking forward to applying the business acumen that he has developed since becoming a young business owner in 2011. After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 2007 with a corporate communications degree, McGuire went into the sports marketing field, and represented various corporate clients for Genesco Sports Enterprises.

Sciuto handles the finance and accounting side of the business, and has been able to support McGuire with his previous experience in franchises and restaurants. In addition to coming from a family who owned a small chain of Mexican restaurants in San Diego, Sciuto also spent four years as a franchise development manager with The Dalton Gang, which worked with various brands including <a href="http://www.mooyahfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=better-burgers-arrive-in-alliance-texas-774" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MOOYAH</a>.

Why did you choose an opportunity with <a href="http://www.mooyahfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=better-burgers-arrive-in-alliance-texas-774" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MOOYAH</a>?

Bailey: Frank and I had always bounced business ideas off each other, and had always planned to open one together. We had never really thought about franchising but the opportunity presented itself through Frank. <a href="http://www.mooyahfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=better-burgers-arrive-in-alliance-texas-774" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MOOYAH </a>was a young brand at the time, and through his job, Frank was able to learn the principles of the brand as well as got to know Rich Hicks and Michael Mabry. They developed a good relationship, and Rich and Michael proposed the idea of becoming a franchisee. While we didn’t meet the normal franchisee requirements, they were willing to bet on us and we were willing to bet on them. I was also looking for a way to return to Texas at the time. I was living in Chicago for work, so my wife and I flew down and visited some stores, did some research, and decided to go for it.

What successes have you experienced since opening?

In 2012 we were named Rookie of the Year by <a href="http://www.mooyahfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=better-burgers-arrive-in-alliance-texas-774" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">MOOYAH </a>and that same year I was named one of the Top Movers and Shakers Under 30 by QSR Magazine. 

How many jobs will you be adding to the community?

We currently have 18-20 employees at our Burleson location, and we have hired 30 people for the second location.

What are your future development plans?

Ideally we’d like to have the third restaurant in the center of Fort Worth, and we’re currently looking for the perfect location. Hopefully we will open it within the next year. We have aspirations of opening at least 3-4 more.

Are you involved with any charities?

For development teams, the challenge is no longer generating volume; it’s recognizing that the people in front of them aren’t buying a dream. They’re making a strategic investment.Development teams still hunting for the wide-eyed dreamer will be let down in 2026. These prospective franchisees do still exist, but the calculated investor is much more common. These people, in most cases, aren’t looking for a hobby, and franchisors must recognize this change and act accordingly.<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerry-defeo-cfe-46244a27">Jerry DeFeo</a>, vice president of franchise operations at&nbsp;<a href="https://honeybakedfranchise.com/">Honey Baked Ham</a>, says the new dynamic is defined by a distinct move toward asset diversification.“Over the past year, we've seen a noticeable shift toward more experienced, more intentional franchise buyers,” DeFeo said. “One of the most significant trends is an investment shift into the franchise industry — more people who previously invested in the stock market or real estate are now investing in businesses as part of their diversified portfolios. I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through. When someone at the franchisor gets home from work, their family will ask, “How was work?” When a franchisee gets home, their family is asking, “How were sales today?” or “How was traffic?” These are franchise units, but they often represent the investment of someone’s life savings and a manifestation of so many hopes and dreams for the future.
