Franchisees Battle Inflation and Slowing Demand Amid Rising Operational Costs, IFA Reports

According to the IFA, 80% of respondents reported that their franchises have unfulfilled job vacancies and 34% of businesses cite the cost and quality of labor as the number one business challenge.

Franchisees across industries continue to struggle with the effects of inflation, with 87% of operators reporting moderate to substantial impacts, according to the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) annual survey

Despite some easing in cost pressures, most franchisees are now facing a slowdown in customer demand due to rising prices, leading to decreased earnings. Around 80% of operators noted a decline in their business earnings over the past year, signaling that despite creative adaptations to labor shortages and cost increases, inflation is now hitting their bottom line.

Labor issues remain significant, particularly in the restaurant sector, where over 80% of operators report challenges in recruiting and retaining workers. This has increased wage costs and put pressure on profit margins. Around 34% of businesses cite the cost and quality of labor as the number one business challenge.

Inflation is impacting nearly all restaurant operators, with 90% of sit-down and 95% of quick-service franchisees raising prices. However, these price increases have led to declining customer traffic, forcing franchisees into a "value war" as they try to attract cost-conscious consumers. This competitive pricing has further hurt franchisee profitability, creating a challenging environment for growth and sustainability despite franchising's overall expansion.

While inflation and demand slowdown are now the top concerns for franchisees, labor challenges have slightly eased, especially outside the restaurant industry. The survey reveals that more franchisees now cite managing costs and inflation as their primary difficulty compared to previous years, reflecting ongoing economic pressures across the sector.
