Military Veterans Who Became Great Franchisees: Damen K. Miller, Image One Facility Solutions

1851 Franchise spoke with Miller about his service in the Army and how his military-honed skills helped in his transition to civilian life as a successful franchisee.

Veteran Franchisee: Damen K. Miller

Franchise: Image One Facility Solutions

Damen K. Miller, a former mechanical expert for the First Cavalry Division, served eight-and-a-half years in the U.S. Army with three combat tours to Iraq and one tour to South Korea. After being honorably discharged in 2012, he moved to Fort Worth, Texas, and pursued further education in technical and business fields.

Miller is now a franchisee with Image One Facility Solutions, the commercial cleaning services franchise, where he applies his military-honed skills in discipline, problem-solving and teamwork to his business.

“Being a veteran helps me deal with everyday business issues that I otherwise would not have any experience with, such as personal inventory control and business-to-business interactions,” said Miller. “My military experience reminds me to persevere in my daily tasks and remain resilient against obstacles.”

1851 Franchise talked with Miller about his journey in franchising, his accomplishments in the industry, and the advice he has for other veterans interested in venturing into franchising.

1851 Franchise: Can you tell me about your background?

Damen K. Miller: I was a mechanical expert who served for the First Cavalry Division and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. In the beginning, my primary job was to oversee the maintenance of several fleet vehicles, including the M88 and the M84A2. As my career advanced, I was given a team of soldiers to train and prepare for deployment and support of other combat units, which was an overall great success. I joined the U.S. Army in 2004 and served for 8.5 years in the military. I recorded three combat tours to Iraq and one tour to South Korea. I was honorably discharged in 2012, fell in love with the city of Dallas, and soon after moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 2014.

I attended Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in 2015 as well as the Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM) in 2017, and in 2021 I earned my Associate's degree in Business and Entrepreneurship from (TCC) Tarrant Community College and have since been applying the knowledge I gained from these institutions to my life and career.

1851: How did your time in the military prepare you for success in franchising?

Miller: Being a veteran helps me deal with everyday business issues that I otherwise would not have any experience with, such as personal inventory control and business-to-business interactions. My military experience reminds me to persevere in my daily tasks and remain resilient against obstacles. The military has also allowed me to stay disciplined in my day-to-day tasks and hone my problem-solving skills while seeking the best options to advance in this field.

1851: What advice would you give other veterans considering transitioning to franchising?

Miller: My advice to other vets looking to start a franchise is to research the company, what is the office environment like, is their team cohesive because, at the end of the day, these are the people you will be working with for a very long time. Teamwork is a big part of being successful in any field, so you should do as much research as you possibly can while also questioning whether the company is operating in the green. Ask what kind of training they employ and if it is something you can see yourself being a part of. One of the last things you want to do is inquire about what kind of help you'll receive in your times of need.

1851: Looking at your franchise journey so far, what are you most proud of?

Miller: I am proud to say that I've found a jewel with Image One Facility Solutions. As I grow and gain more experience, I have no doubt that Image One will be behind me, helping and supporting me with whatever I need. In the short amount of time that I have been on this team, I have experienced nothing but great hospitality, understanding and support.
