The much-anticipated Popeyes Chicken Sandwich finally debuted last week and critics have been raving about the offering, which happens to closely resemble that of competitor Chick-fil-A. For many fried chicken fans, another QSR entering the ring is seen as a guilt-free alternative for those who feel uneasy about supporting Chick-fil-A executives’ notoriously conservative practices

Although the popular fried chicken chain has no official political affiliation, the Chick-fil-A Foundation has donated significant funds to groups with a history of LGBTQ discrimination. In 2012, Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy even claimed that gay marriage was “inviting God’s judgment on our nation.” Enter Popeyes new sandwich—a crispy battered chicken breast completely devoid of fire and brimstone.

Word on the social media streets is that Popeyes new sandwich holds up, but that didn’t stop other chains like Wendy’s from entering the ring. Chick-fil-A boldly cast the first stone, tweeting “Bun + Chicken + Pickles = all the ?? for the original.” It is almost a flex how unfunny this tweet is, as if to say the brand is so confident in its product it doesn’t need social media to garner attention.

Popeye’s replied with what I’m sure many users were thinking,... y’all good?” Wendy’s was next throw down. “Y’all out here fighting about which of these fools has the second best chicken sandwich,” said Wendy's in a tweet. Popeye’s quickly clapped back, “Sounds like someone just ate one of our biscuits. Cause y’all looking thirsty.”

Wherever your alliances are (I’m not judging), this was a day for the memes—most of which are not appropriate to reproduce in print. For a in-depth play-by-play of the epic showdown, read the full story here
