In late 2022, alongside tens of thousands of other tech employees, Stack was laid off and began the job hunt. After about seven months of job searching, Stack came to the conclusion that he was too experienced for many of the open roles and considered an alternate path.He reconnected with a high school friend, a franchise broker, and discussed his interests and passions. While the concept checked all of the boxes in theory, meeting CEO Bryan Park and the rest of the team in person sealed the deal.1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us.&nbsp;What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Stack:&nbsp;Out of college, I started on Wall Street. I was on the floor of the stock exchange for about four years, which I enjoyed. I decided that it really wasn’t something that I wanted to do after watching two young men die from heart attacks. That ultra-stress, ultra-fast-paced environment — I realized that probably wasn’t the career path I wanted to go down.I moved toward the tech space and worked at Bloomberg for about six years in an account management and sales capacity. I enjoyed that. Then, I was asked by a previous colleague to join them at Salesforce, so I was there and part of the initial financial service vertical team. I did that for quite some time. Afterward, a previous colleague asked me to come over and help build out the customer success team.I joined a dot-com company and shifted more into the startup environment. There, I was really in a customer success capacity, running and designing their customer success teams. I was also a general manager of one of their product lines. I was there for a number of years, but I ended up being a part of the big round of tech layoffs that took place in late 2022.&nbsp;After a number of months being laid off, nobody was hiring — especially someone with more senior experience like myself. That pushed me in the direction of entrepreneurship. I always wanted to work for myself in some capacity, but it was always a matter of “What is my skill set?” The job hunt really provided a great opportunity to explore that.While I was on LinkedIn looking for opportunities, I noticed that one of my previous friends from high school became a franchise broker. He owned a residential floor-cleaning business and really enjoyed the franchise model, so he moved into helping other people into the space. I called him, thinking he could help me better understand the franchise world and what opportunities were out there. He introduced me to <a href="https://www.footprintsfloorsfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=after-the-tech-layoffs-of-2022-brian-stack-found-his-way-to-entrepreneurship-with-footprints-floors-2722582" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Footprints Floors</a>.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Stack:&nbsp;I had a high-level understanding of the concept. Obviously, there’s a business model that was successful for whoever the franchisor is. I’d read a couple books as I was digging my teeth into this idea. I understood what it was about, but I didn’t know what to look for and what to stay away from as far as franchise models.The advice I would give is for people to really understand the Franchise Disclosure Document; the devil’s in the details there. Take the time to have an attorney look over all of the documents. There will be expenses that you have to be mature enough to justify. If you can’t get over the fact that you might have to invest a couple thousand dollars for a service that will help you in the long run, franchising probably isn’t the way to go.You’re going to be spending money on the front-end, and that will continue with marketing costs and royalties. Understand what your regular fixed costs are and what your variable expenses are. That can help you project how much you’ll need in reserves to keep the business afloat for three to five months until you get everything built up.1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Stack:&nbsp;Footprints Floors really checked all of the boxes in terms of how I like to run my day-to-day and conduct myself. I liked the fact that it was home-based and that, if I had to, I could do the work myself. It was a relatively low cost of entry, so that mitigated risk a little bit. When I got out to meet the Footprints team in person, I really enjoyed the folks. That, coupled with the infrastructure, really sold me on the concept.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Stack:&nbsp;What I hope to achieve is financial stability. Obviously when you’re out of work, there’s a bit of added stress there. My wife is a Spanish teacher, and she loves it. But she had to take on a second job. I want to make sure she doesn’t have to do that. I don’t want her to get burnt out.Beyond that, it would be great to just continue this business on. One of the things I do like about Footprints Floors specifically is that it is something you can do in your late 60s or early 70s. It’s something you can do later in life. As long as you have your mental faculties with you, you can do this job. This is also something that, if any of my kids wanted to join, we would be able to grow to develop a true family business with a place for everyone.1851:&nbsp;What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Stack:&nbsp;My story is one of good and bad timing. Bad timing in that I was a part of the tech layoffs, with tens of thousands of other people. But, if we take that negative and turn it into a positive, that gives me an opportunity to take the risk.When I was younger, I had a friend whose father would always say, “Don’t work for somebody else. Invest in yourself.” As we grow up through our 20s and 30s, we have good and bad jobs, but sometimes you start to reflect on why you’re doing what you are. That saying always bounced around in my head, and now I’m finally doing it. I will have financial and personal freedom. I don’t have to ask for a week off. As silly as that sounds, those little freedoms add up. There’s something to be said about working for yourself.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Stack:&nbsp;You need to be able to have blind faith that you’ve made the right decision. Think, “I’ve done all the research I can possibly do. I’ve talked to a number of people, and now it’s up to me.” Not all feedback is going to be encouraging, but that’s why you ask. There’s value there, too. That calls for some self-reflection. Criticism can be a good thing if delivered subtly, but ultimately, you should trust yourself and your decision. Take the plunge. Don’t look back. Brian Keaney comes from a long line of tradesmen; in fact, he jokes he’s known how to wire a house since high school. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? Now that I'm married, have kids, lead Cub Scouts, coach sports teams, and everything else, I just don't have as much time as I used to. I’ve heard some horror stories about other franchises, and every time I say to myself, “That hasn’t been my experience at all.”&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. He gets excited about business ideas. And I share that to some degree. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs. I probably feel more comfortable going into business with him than I would on my own because I know what he brings to the table.Our ideas about helping the community align perfectly. Both of us were raised in the Baptist church, and our faith plays a big role in who we are. I feel a deep sense of gratitude and confidence that we’re going to be successful because of that foundation. When I lost my job, a lot of people might have felt stressed or uncertain, but I felt calm. I knew it was time to step out and do my own thing. That’s how we got here.Jones:&nbsp;One thing I’ve learned in life is that challenges can become opportunities. What feels like a setback is often just an opportunity waiting around the corner. It’s all about how you respond. If the situation had been reversed, I know Ike would have been there for me too.
