In this podcast, host Rob Gandley interviewed FranNet CEO Jania Bailey, who shared some details on her background in banking and consulting before joining the company over 17 years ago. She highlighted FranNet’s journey from a mutual benefit company run by committees to a franchise model.

Some other topics covered by the franchise expert included: valuable insights for emerging franchise brands seeking growth, the role of technology and innovation in brand development and how to effectively make big decisions and communicate those decisions during periods of change.

Proper Strategies for Emerging Brands

Bailey emphasized the importance of a well-planned concept for emerging franchise brands and the impact of hiring the right people.

"I really don't like to bring on brands unless they have proof of concept. I always tell people that the first 10 [locations] are critical,” she said. “The biggest mistake I see young brands make is hiring their friends, cousins, brothers for sales that have never been in franchise development.”

Bailey also discussed the critical role of the first few franchisees and the need for strong validation to build credibility with franchise consultants and brokers.

Technology and Innovation in Franchising

When Gandley asked Bailey about her insights on technology and innovation in franchising, she explained her team’s method of questioning their current processes to make continual improvements.

"You can never stand still, regardless of what your business is and how good you are at it," said Bailey.

Communication Throughout Change and Growth

Bailey also emphasized the importance of effective communication throughout the continued change and growth of a brand.

“I believe in open communication early and often through change,” said Bailey. “First you have to get everybody to understand why it's necessary, then you have to be able to point out the advantages to them of making the change.”
