Backed by a strong network of locations on both coasts, Great Clips closes in on Central Canada

The largest hair salon company in the world continues to expand in Canada.

With over 4,200 stores and over $1 billion in annual system wide revenue, Great Clips is now expanding its time-tested franchise model in Central Canada. In particular, the fast-growing brand has its sights set on Winnipeg and the Manitoba region—an area that could be the new home to more than 25 locations.

To date, there are more than 1.3 million people currently residing in Manitoba, with over 800,000 alone in the city of Winnipeg. Beth Caron, the director of franchise development at Great Clips, believes that the brand is just getting started in its Central Canadian expansion.

"Great Clips has what customers really want — great quality haircuts that are easy to book with known wait times and at a reasonable price," Caron said. "We deliver on our promise, and our growth has shown it.”

One of the drivers of Great Clips’ growth is its technology. The online check-in app was the first of its kind. Customers simply hit “Check In,” and the app pulls up a map of all locations and wait times. They select their check in location, show up, and walk-ins can’t get ahead of them. This app creates brand loyalty, which is also facilitated by the Chip Notes program that stores notes on a customer’s preferred haircut and can be accessed around the world. The brand's utilization of these technologies has helped them dominate the market, reporting 51 quarters of same-store sales growth.

According to Great Clips’ COO and incoming President, Rob Goggins, Winnipeg boasts a lot of elements that work in Great Clips’ favor. Released in early 2017, the 2016 census shows Winnipeg’s growth outpacing Canada’s national growth rate. The region’s demographics are a sign of good things to come for the brand, too.

“We now have opened our 150th salon in Canada this year, which nicely sums up with Canada's 150th Anniversary,” said Goggins. “We already have a great presence in Toronto and the surrounding marketing. We also have a great presence out west in Edmonton and Vancouver. Now we’re closing in on Central Canada. Great Clips is already looking for real estate and have sites where we can open. All that’s left is to find the right prospects and get them through our process.”

By using great technology, concentrating build-out in high traffic areas and encouraging franchisees to get involved in their local communities, Great Clips keeps gaining traction to spark development both nationally and internationally.

“We already have a good understanding of what customers expect in this region. We are quickly moving in Winnipeg,” Goggins added. “We have been very strategic in researching markets to ensure our new franchisees have all the tools and resources they need to succeed, which is why we’re confident in targeting Winnipeg next.”
