In the case of homes specifically, radon is able to enter through what is called the stack effect, Swackhammer explained. As it emanates up from the earth, it can seep through cracks in the foundation of the home or perforations where utility lines enter the home, entering the lower levels of the structure.“If you think of your house as a big chimney, air goes from the bottom and works its way up,” he added. “The lower levels of the home are always under negative pressure compared to the other areas of the house, so it is constantly sucking in whatever air it can to reach a pressure equilibrium. As it pulls in this air, a lot of what comes from underground will include the gasses found in soil — including radon.”The danger of radon is that it is both radioactive and incredibly difficult to detect. Much like carbon monoxide, radon is colorless, tasteless and odorless, making it entirely impossible to detect with natural senses.“Because it’s radioactive, radon is constantly decaying, emitting what we call alpha particles — a type of radiation,” Swackhammer explained. “Those particles damage the sensitive tissue in our lungs. Every time we breathe in radon gas, it decays within our lungs, damaging that tissue. This is a very big problem because it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. First is smoking, second is radon.”According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.epa.gov/radon/health-risk-radon?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=mold-medics-corners-the-market-as-the-only-franchise-offering-in-demand-radon-related-services-2721333" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">EPA</a>, radon is the cause of 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year.Where Is Radon Found, and Why Does That Matter?As Mold Medics looks to expand in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and more, its target markets align well with some of the communities that are most affected by radon.“Some areas are more prone to radon issues because of the geography,” Swackhammer said. “Uranium is more prevalent in certain types of soil, particularly along the mountains. Pennsylvania and Ohio tend to have pretty high levels of uranium in the soil, which results in higher levels of radon in homes.
