How did you decide it was for you?Rose Romero:&nbsp;My journey started in the daycare world, working with kids — first as a teacher, then as a director. After having children of my own, I found myself needing support when my oldest, now 33, suffered a medical issue that caused her to miss an entire year of school. She needed extra help, and while I’d love to say I googled “Sylvan,” the truth is I picked up a phone book. That’s how we found Sylvan and my daughter became a student there.From the moment I walked in, I thought, “This is exactly what teaching is supposed to be like.” I started as a center director, quickly moved to a multi-center director and then transitioned into running the state of Utah. I did that for quite some time before stepping into the role of director of education, then as a regional leader, traveling and working with Sylvan in different capacities.Originally, I worked on the corporate side, but when the state of Utah was purchased by franchisee&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-loudon-a602704/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=sylvan-learning-in-layton-utah-celebrates-15-years-continuing-a-legacy-of-student-success-2728471" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Mike Loudon</a>, he made an effort to visit all the centers and get to know everyone. As he was deciding who to bring on board, my one condition was that I would stay if he purchased the northern territory, since that’s where I lived and where I first started with the Layton center.When he eventually decided to step away, it only made sense for him to offer me the northern territory. And that’s how I became a franchisee. My entire career has been centered around working with kids, and I’ve never looked back.1851: What have been some of the most significant achievements or milestones you’ve reached since becoming a franchisee?Romero: For me, it’s been about building a personal connection with families. I had that connection before, but now, as a franchisee, I make the decisions. I don’t have to ask for permission.One of the biggest achievements has been engaging with the community in a way I felt was missing for a long time. Being able to go out and bridge the gaps between what schools need, what Sylvan offers and how Sylvan can support both schools and the community has been my greatest accomplishment so far. It’s about creating a world where we all work together.1851:&nbsp;How would you say that Sylvan has positively impacted children and families in your community?Romero:&nbsp;It’s incredible to see the strength in these children — to watch them beam with confidence after just a short time with us and to see their scores rise. It creates this ripple effect of “I can do it, I’m successful,” and it encourages others to seek that same support if they need it. That feeling of I can do it has been one of the most powerful impacts Sylvan has had.1851:&nbsp;What would you say sets your center staff apart?&nbsp;Romero:&nbsp;I would say it’s the culture we’ve built. Our teachers come in knowing they are here for the students, but I see it as my responsibility to be there for them. I know they spend all day teaching at school and then come straight to Sylvan. This is like a second home for them, so I make sure they have what they need — whether it’s a stocked fridge or quick snacks — because they don’t always get a chance to stop in between.When teachers feel supported and cared for, that energy naturally flows to the kids. I truly believe that Sylvan has an incredible training system and core philosophy that helps teachers understand why we do this and what the ultimate goal is. My role as an owner and director is to ensure they’re getting that positive reinforcement, staying engaged with their training and feeling valued.We have a lot of dedicated, caring teachers here in Davis County who love what they do. When they feel supported, they’re excited to keep doing this work, day and night.1851: Are there any unique programs or initiatives that have contributed to your success?Romero:&nbsp;Right now, Utah has an incredible scholarship program called&nbsp;<a href="https://ufascholarship.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=sylvan-learning-in-layton-utah-celebrates-15-years-continuing-a-legacy-of-student-success-2728471" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Utah Fits All</a>. I believe many states have similar initiatives, but Utah’s program has been a great opportunity for us. Building relationships with homeschool families through this program has been a meaningful experience. While I’m still working on strengthening our partnerships with local schools, Utah Fits All has allowed us to connect with a whole new community.I’ve been with Sylvan for 23 years and homeschooling has never really been a target market we’ve focused on. But now, being able to support parents who are navigating homeschooling on their own has been a rewarding experience for both sides. It’s been a great merging of support and resources.Beyond that, I’m continuing to build relationships with local schools, whether it’s through partnerships or simple gestures like providing banners to show our support. I’m excited to keep growing those connections.1851:&nbsp;As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Layton center, how do you see the future of the centers and Sylvan overall?Romero:&nbsp;I see us continuing to grow, with more satisfied families who are excited about their progress and sharing their experiences with others. I see us soaring — keeping that momentum going, staying engaged in the community and making sure people know we’re here to support them.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Romero:&nbsp;I was actually a student with Sylvan when I was a child, but I don’t have a lot of memory of anything before the age of 16 when I was in a bad accident. Brian Keaney comes from a long line of tradesmen; in fact, he jokes he’s known how to wire a house since high school. But while his&nbsp;family members were building careers as electricians and carpenters, Keaney was penning his own story as a local reporter.Now, after two decades of telling stories, he’s making a dramatic return to his roots with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.trubluefranchise.com/">TruBlue Home Service Ally</a> of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.trublueally.com/newton-wellesley">Newton-Wellesley</a>, a home maintenance service dedicated to helping seniors in Dedham, Needham and surrounding communities. Seeing the “writing on the wall”&nbsp;— AI’s disruption of the communications industry&nbsp;— Keaney was motivated to return to a career that was recession-resistant.&nbsp;The mission became personal for Keaney a few years ago when his grandfather returned home from a rehabilitation stay. To ensure he could move around the house, Keaney and his uncles stepped in to perform immediate modifications, such as laying Masonite over wall-to-wall carpeting. Keaney realized that most seniors don't have a family with the technical skills or resources to execute those vital safety changes on a moment's notice.However, Keaney’s focus isn't limited to the elderly. As a parent, Cub Scout leader and youth sports coach, he understands the time crunch faced by many families. By handling everything from seasonal maintenance to minor home improvements, Keaney aims to help neighbors “reclaim their weekends.”1851 Franchise sat down with Keaney to discuss the launch of his new business. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. You only have to look at my credit card bill to see what a big industry kids' sports is — I've got two kids obsessed with them. In the end, I decided to go with TruBlue, because kids' sports is a pretty crowded industry, and I didn't want to compete there.I really liked TruBlue's mission of helping seniors age in place and helping busy families. A lot of the things that we go out and do are stuff that I would just do around the house myself. Now that I'm married, have kids, lead Cub Scouts, coach sports teams, and everything else, I just don't have as much time as I used to. I know there are a lot of families like mine out there where these things need to get done, and they just don't have the time.&nbsp;I am also really pleased with TruBlue as a franchisor. I’ve heard some horror stories about other franchises, and every time I say to myself, “That hasn’t been my experience at all.”&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Can you frame your personal story for us? What do you want us to know about your journey into franchising?Kevin Lewis: My journey to franchising really started when I moved to Florida. I moved from Tennessee. I’ve been auditing since I got back from Afghanistan in 2012. I went to work for a CPA firm and have been auditing ever since.In Tennessee, I oversaw internal audits for the Tennessee National Guard. When I came down to Florida, I started working for the Defense Contract Audit Agency. When they did away with telework, I had to go into the office every day, which was a four-hour round trip. So, I was really looking for a career change. I came across a company on LinkedIn called&nbsp;<a href="https://entrepreneurssource.com/">The Entrepreneur’s Source</a>. They’re the ones who started leading me down the franchise track. They presented different options and Fresh Coat jumped out at me. One thing that was taught to us is that home improvement tends to be resistant to economic downturns. And that’s one thing that drew me in.Another thing I found intriguing is that when I was auditing, I would send an audit report out to whatever defense company I was auditing. But you would never see the results of your work. It was probably years in the making because any findings could be adjudicated five or 10 years down the road (depending on when the contract closed). So, one thing I like about painting and home improvement is you can always see the fruits of your work. You can see the end effort. It gives a sense of accomplishment.1851: What was your perception of franchising before you became a franchisee and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you’re in it?Kevin: One, that it was too expensive to get into. Because when you think of franchising, you think of the major chain brands. You don’t really realize that the cost of entry is there for somebody who’s just wanting to break the surface. I got a better impression when one of my friends, one of my lieutenants from Afghanistan actually, got into franchising. It was a lot of hard work at the beginning but the amount of independence he has now and the financial security he has now was appealing. When the opportunity came up and was presented to me, that’s what piqued my interest.1851: What excites you most about Fresh Coat Painters?Kevin: One thing I like about Fresh Coat is the expertise they bring in. Is there a plan for growth?Kevin: I’d like to open at least two more territories and manage it that way. My goal is to get project managers who can help manage each territory so that I can oversee all of them. I didn’t get into business for myself to be doing day-to-day operations like going out and doing quotes. I want to manage a business. I don’t want to run every aspect of it. You don’t get into business for yourself to work it as a job. You work it as a business. As an owner.1851: What advice do you have for people who might be thinking about becoming franchise owners?Kevin: One piece of advice is to try to get over your fear of the financial investment it may take. What’s your peace of mind worth? What’s your freedom worth to you? You can continue in a safe, routine job. But you’re always going to be dependent on other people as to when you can take off and what you can do. If you really want that freedom, I would say, although it’s hard work at the beginning, franchising has a great payoff.If you’re good at following a system, then franchising is probably for you. They like to recruit military because we train, from private up to officer, to be able to do the next person’s job. We do it through repetition and SOPs.
