Why Franchisee Justin Rowling Expanded His Premium Service Brands Portfolio with Handyman Pro

The multi-brand franchise owner, who already operates two Premium Service Brands concepts — 360º Painting and a Maid Right franchise — chose Handyman Pro because of the growing need for holistic home-repair services in his community.

After nearly two decades in the automotive industry, Charlottesville, Virginia-based franchisee Justin Rowling decided it was time to pursue his lifelong dream of entrepreneurship. Instead of starting something on his own, Rowling was immediately drawn to franchising as it offered him the one thing he wanted most: options. Rowling’s main goal was to start a scalable business portfolio that would hopefully allow him to one day expand into multiple verticals. When he heard about Premium Service Brands, Rowling saw a unique opportunity to dominate his local market through multiple businesses.

Premium Service Brands differentiates itself in the home-services segment and the franchising industry by encouraging franchisees like Rowling to grow vertically by adding on new brands in the same market as opposed to expanding horizontally to nearby territories with one brand. By leveraging multiple brands, a franchise owner can build community relationships within a single market and offer multiple services to meet customers' ongoing home-services needs. Now, as the franchise owner of three Premium Service Brands concepts, Rowling is doing just that.

Rowling invested in Premium Service Brands’ painting company 360º Painting in September 2018 and then residential cleaning franchise Maid Right franchise in December 2018, both based in Central Virginia. After generating consistent revenue with those two businesses and establishing a dedicated clientele, Rowling was ready to expand. He decided to invest in Handyman Pro in September 2020 because he recognized a major need for holistic home-repair services in the Central Virginia area.

Established in 2018, Handyman Pro is a fast-growing home-repair and remodeling franchise that provides a wide range of services, including carpentry, electrical, gutters, siding, windows, doors, masonry, plumbing, HOA maintenance and much more. Handyman Pro was built from the ground up by Premium Service Brands to specifically complement and integrate with the multi-brand franchisor’s existing roster of service franchises, which is exactly why Rowling chose to invest.

Handyman Pro is a fantastic business model because we can do just about anything — small painting projects, power washing, putting together trampolines, kitchen remodels, deck building, replacing light bulbs — nothing is too small or too big, and the concept is a great hybrid between a lot of other brands in the segment,” he said. “The beauty of Premium Service Brands is that once you figure one concept out, you can easily start another, as the business models are very similar. You are providing different services, but they are all home-based and all require a similar type of advertising, which makes it easy to grow vertically. Once you have that confidence, you are better positioned to move right on to the next one.”

Thanks to his experience with 360º Painting and Maid Right, Rowling also notes that Handyman Pro was particularly easy to start because he knew he would have a business coach, an established customer base and all the corporate support he needed. Plus, Rowling knew he’d be able to get off the ground quickly with low overhead costs and a streamlined business model.

“Justin Rowling is a prime example of a Premium Service Brands franchise owner who is taking full advantage of our multi-brand roster of home service concepts,” said Iric Wexler, vice president of franchise development. “Handyman Pro doesn’t just benefit from Premium Service Brands’ network of support, it also benefits from our existing brands. Franchisees like Rowling are able to leverage an existing infrastructure of clientele and marketing resources to cross-promote their businesses and appeal to a wide range of clients’ ongoing home services needs. We are excited to see Justin continue to expand his portfolio and grow with Handyman Pro and Premium Service Brands.”

Plus, as Rowling points out, the demand for those ongoing home services is on a major uptick as more people stay at home and take the time to tackle all of their overdue home projects.

Now, Rowling says Premium Service Brands offers franchisees an incredible and lucrative opportunity to tap into this consumer demand from several different angles. With the company’s newly launched Own the Home Program, prospective Premium Service Brands franchisees will receive 10% off the franchise fee if they purchase more than one brand.

Although he only opened his Handyman Pro operation a few months ago, Rowling says he already has customers that are working across all three of his businesses.

“I have one customer who just bought a new house, and we refinished their floors through Handyman Pro, painted the inside with 360º Painting, and when it was all done we did a move-in clean with Maid Right,” he said. “That really is how the franchise opportunity is supposed to work, and I am glad to add Handyman Pro’s services to my growing list of offerings.”

The initial investment to open a Handyman Pro ranges from $99,125 to $139,500, including $60,000 that must be paid to the franchisor or affiliate. The brand is actively seeking franchise owners in suburban markets nationwide, including Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Phoenix, San Antonio, Boston, Raleigh and more.
